Rituparno Ghosh, a name synonymous with artistic movies, was born on this day (31 August) in the year 1963. A self-professed Satyajit Ray fan he is best remembered for making thought-provoking movies. On his birth anniversary, we decided to walk down memory lane and recall the legend’s few of best presentation.

Here are few iconic National Award winning films from his kitty. Have a look.

Unishe April- Unishe April is the tale of the bitter relationship between a mother who is a well-known danseuse and her daughter who is about to start her career as a doctor. The film featured Aparna Sen and Debashree Roy in the role of mother and daughter respectively. The film earned two National Awards.

Dahan- Starring Indrani Halder, Abhishek Chatterjee and Rituparna Sengupta in lead roles Dahan is based on Suchitra Bhattacharya's story of the same name. The bold storyline and Ghosh’s penmanship helped him to earn the National Award of Best Screenplay.

Utsab- Utsab narrated the tale of a cultured Bengali family who united in their native house on the auspicious occasion of Durga puja and how everyone plotted underneath for their own benefits. For the first time ever, any contemporary filmmaker decided to touch the sensitive and tabooed issue of romantic affair between cousins. Ghosh not only won accolades in national film circuit, but also had won the Golden Lotus Award (best direction) for this film.

Shubho Mahurat- This thriller is based on Agatha Christie's Miss Marple story The Mirror Crack'd from Side to Side. The film witnessed two Bollywood veterans Sharmila Tagore and Raakhee coming together. The Bong avatar of Miss Marple essayed by Raakhee made the seasoned actor won a National Film Award as the best actress in a supporting role.

Chokher Bali- The critically acclaimed film based on Rabindranath Tagore’s novel of the same name was one of the most controversial one, for its explicit love making scenes. The film was shown in over 25 international festivals including the Toronto International Film Festival and London Film Festival. The film marked Aishwarya Rai Bachhan’s debut venture in Bengali films.

Raincoat- Raincoat featuring Ajay Devgn and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is the story of two lovers who are separated by destiny and meet again one fine day. Raincoat is the adaptation of one of the most romantic short stories by O Henry, The Gift of the Magi. It bagged the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi.

Shob Charitro Kalponik- It revolves around a non-resident Bengali girl Radhika who got married to the thespian poet Indranil Mitra and settled down in the city of joy, Kolkata. It featured Bipasha Basu and Prosenjit Chatterjee in the lead roles. The film won National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Bengali and was screened at the Cannes Film Festival.

Abohoman- It is based on a married film director who falls in love with an actress who is the same age as his son. Through various layers, the film explores the nuances of relationships and the connection between an artist and their muse. Ananya Chatterjee bagged one National Film Award.

Chitrangada- The Crowning Wish- Drawing inspirations from the Indian epic Mahabharata’s character Chitrangada, the flick narrated the story of a choreographer who struggled with his gender identity. And for the first time ever, the noted filmmaker acted in the role of the protagonist in his own film. It earned the Special Jury Award at the 60th National Film Awards.

We are much aware that every movie lover misses this ace director till the date. We only wish that his soul rests in peace.
