If Sanjay Leela Bhansali can set Shakespeare’s love tragedy <em> Romeo & Juliet </em> in Gujarat why can’t Shekhar Kapoor situate the same timeless material in futuristic Mumbai ? And shoot it in Singapore? That’s exactly what Shekhar will do in <em>Paani</em>. The film is a tale of star-crossed lovers from incompatible social strata where the girl would be an upper-class elite of Caucasian pedigree while the boy would be tanned bare-bodied desi ruffian with the manners of a street urchin and the lingo of a fish seller.

Yash Raj Films (YRF) has joined hands with Shekhar Kapur to produce his ambitious project Paani. Talking about his association with YRF, Kapur said, "I have been preparing for this film for a long time, but always wanted an Indian partner that has the same passion for the film as I do. I have finally found one in Adi (Aditya Chopra). It’s a huge production that demands futuristic sets and large action pieces. In Yash Raj Films, I have found a perfect home for <em>Paani.</em>"

After getting worldwide acclaim for The Slumdog Millionaire, director Danny Boyle has decided to turn producer for Shekhar Kapur’s ambitious project <em>Paani</em> starring Hrithik Roshan, Though the project was formally announced at the 63rd Cannes International Film Festival in 2010, but Kapur has now confirmed that he will start shooting his ambitious film in April next year (2013). “Right now, I am doing the organisation-related work before I start actual filming in April next year,” said Kapur in confirmation.
