My job is a thankless one; but I still love it: Supervising Producer Samir Pandey

Supervising Producer Samir Pandey

Coming from a family of businessman in Delhi, Samir Pandey never imagined that he would be spending his time on the sets, giving orders to a crew! He is the supervising producer at one of the leading production houses, Directors’ Kut Production for the last nine years. Currently he is working with Star Plus' Tere Sheher Mein.

Talking to Tellychakkar.com, Samir shared a lot about his journey, job profile, plans of future, and a lot more...

Over to you, young man!

Tell us more about your journey in the industry...
It has been nine years with Directors Kut Productions now, but initially I started out working for independent music videos. I joined Venus soon and was happy in the music industry, before serials started enticing me. I applied to Balaji, who refused me for being inexperienced. But months later, they contacted me and I joined as an Executive Producer. Things were not that smooth there and I moved to DKP. Rest, as they say, is history.

You have been associated with Directors Kut for quite some time, loyalty or security?
(Laughs) Both. I think I can never manage to get a team like this! It is a completely different experience here and I will never ever leave the production house. They are my support system.

What is the job profile of a supervising producer and how much authority does he have?
On the sets, even the dropping of a pin has to be in co-ordination with us. We have to take care of the telecast and handle all the actors, tackle time crisis and every other job. Thankfully, all has worked out well for me in my journey till now. As everyone on the sets is like a family and I manage them with love.

Do you feel your job is a thankless one?
I think every business where you are not seen goes ignored. People don’t know us so how would we get credits. Yes, it’s a thankless one,  but I love my job.

With so many creative and talented people, do egos clash?
I feel if everybody keeps to their work, there will be peace for sure. Everyone should know their job and be clear about it. If you don’t interfere, there is no clash.

How much of change have you seen in the industry?
A lot of change. Initially we started off doing weekly and now with shows running six-seven days, there is a lot of pressure. The whole process has become fast and teams have also become big to deal with the work load.

How do you handle the tantrums of actors on the sets?
Tantrums can be dealt with if you take care of their timings and dates. Nobody behaves eccentrically without reasons.

Any difficult moment on the sets you would like to share?
I remember during one of our shoots, the lead actress had to be rushed to the hospital. Such situations can create panic, but we spoke to our team, changed the scripts and shot with close ups to get the job done.

How satisfied and secure are you in your job?
No one can be satisfied with their job. Somewhere, I do hope that I can launch my own show as a producer, but let’s see where life takes me. I still have a long journey. Every show that I take up, I feel it would be my last one so that I can try different things but I am so connected to this world that it’s hard to leave.

Who do you feel is your idol in the industry?
It would be really immodest to say this but I would name myself only. I think I have learnt everything I know today because I wanted to. A young guy can go crazy when left alone in the city, but I chose to work and learn and I am proud of that fact.

How much of support do you receive from your family?
Complete support. I mean a woman would have run away seeing her husband’s crazy schedule. But my wife has stood by me and I am blessed that way. Also, I had decided that wherever my show’s set is put up, I would move there. This is my third show in Mira Road, near my place, and I am happy jostling between set and home.

And finally any tips to youngsters who want to enter the industry?
I feel one should be ready to learn from the scratch and be associated with every field of the industry. Trust people and do maintain your faith  in you. Also, it is important to educate yourself so don’t fall back on that sphere.
