Neeli Chhatri Wale has nothing to do with Oh My God - Ashwini Dhir

Ashwini Dhir
Producer of well-known shows like Chidiya Ghar and Lapataganj, Ashwini Dhir is all ready to spread some godly magic on Indian television audience through his new fiction series interestingly titled as Neeli Chattri Wale. The show which is all set to beam on Zee from 30 August will showcase the relationship between a common man and God. We caught up with this affable and ever smiling producer to know more about his latest venture. What’s with your fixation with God? There is of course a general fixation. Who doesn’t have that fixation? God is omnipresent. We think about God, consciously or unconsciously at all times. There is God in our homes. There are gods and temples outside our homes. God’s presence is akin to breathing fresh air. Our lives revolve around our Gods. Lots of comparisons are already being drawn between Neeli Chattri Wale and Oh My God… (Cuts In) I was aghast when I first heard about it because there is absolutely no connection with Oh My God. Just because my serial has God, it doesn’t mean that it is inspired or same as Oh My God. And why are people just connecting it with Oh My God. Why not God Tussi Great Ho? So I would request everyone to not speculate. For example, if tomorrow you write an article on women empowerment, would it be right to say that your piece is inspired from one that Shobhaa De wrote two years ago on the same subject? It would be wrong to say that. In the same manner, it is wrong to say that Neeli Chattri Wale is based on Oh My God. Comedy is your forte. This serial too seems to have its fair share of funny elements. Was it a conscious decision to include comedy in this serial as well? No it was not a conscious decision to put in comedy. But tell me what is life without comedy. There will be no fun at all. It’s always nice to say whatever you want with a smile. And it happens in our daily lives too. Our wife sometimes says things which make us feel like fools. But instead of fighting we just laugh at it. Even in this serial, Yashpal Sharma’s wife says Aapse Accha toh Khanna Saab hain. To this Yashpal says, “ As if you are Katrina Kaif!’ So that is the kind of comedy we have. What would you say is the USP of this serial? The USP is the relationship between middle class India and God. The middle class India share a beautiful relationship with God. We celebrate Ganpati, Navrati and every other festival with great fervour. When we step out of our house we pray to God to keep us safe. When we reach home, we thank God for helping us reach home safely. Every small thing has God associated with it. As in we often say,’ Thank God, this happened or this didn’t happen’. If something bad happens we blame God and if something good happens we thank him for the same. So we are trying to explore this beautiful relationship through this serial. Why did you choose Himanshu Soni to play Lord Shiva? I wanted someone who is tall, handsome and has certain freshness in his face. Himanshu suited the character to the T. You were arrested recently. What’s the current status of the case? Since the matter is sub-judice, I wouldn't like to say anything about it. Do you think you were wrongly charged? Whatever I have said is there in Ramayan. Now we will see what happens in the case. Would you take extra precautions while dealing with similar subjects in future? I have always been taking precautions while dealing with such subjects right from the very beginning. Did any such incident occur before? It didn’t. All I am saying is whatever I have said has been said and written in Ramayan itself.
