A show will find its own audience if you write and tell the story well- Namit Sharma, Zee TV Programming Head

Namit Sharma, Zee TV Programming Head
Maharakshak Aryan is all set to take off on 1st November and excited is the entire team at Zee. We recently caught up with Zee TV Programming Head - Namit Sharma to know more about the latest superhero saga to emerge from the stables of Zee. Excerpts from the interview: Why is Maharakshak Aryan a teenage superhero and not an adult? The thought was simple. Infact, we didn't over think this part. When we got the story, it was already the story of a teenage superhero. We thought it might be a refreshing change for the audience because everywhere else they see these bulked up, bare-chested, leather pants wearing sword flashing superheroes. So we thought a teenage superhero will bring in a different mood, different visuals and different story for the audience. That is why we were okay with the teenage superhero. We do however have a beefy villain (Vikramjeet Virk). Why is the show a finite series? There is nothing to gain from all the loyalty that you have built over years if you are just doing normal long episodic series. So this is our way of doing a finite series and yet not losing the audience. So if the audience enjoy watching Maharakshak Aryan, I am convinced that they will like the next Maharakshak series because the brand remains the same. So it is about habit building. So you want your audience to develop a habit of watching the Maharakshak series? Yes. If you look at it, at 9 pm, our audience tunes in to watch talent shows be it singing or dancing. Even when a new show takes over the older one, the habit of tuning into Zee at 9 pm to watch new talent will not go away. So habit building is our intention. Wouldn't it have been a safer bet to gauge the success of Maharakshak Aryan and then perhaps announce the trilogy? We have no choice because the production of these kind of shows take long. Also, we have done some market research about what the audience wants. I believe you can either chase the audience or attract them. Every show has the ability to create its own audience. As a programming head, I strongly believe in the notion that if you write and tell a story well, a show will find its own audience. When we launched Neeli Chhatri Waale, we knew that we liked the show but we didn't know which part of it the audience would like. But as the show progressed, we totally got a sense of what the audience liked in the show. So every show can find its audience. Would Indian adults enjoy watching a teenage superhero TV show? Why do you watch superhero movies, fantasy films or read books? Only because they transport you to a different realm. Our show has effects, action, emotion, comedy and a love story. There are some very funny scenes when Aryan travels to different worlds where he encounters different creatures. There are nice hilarious scenes which everyone will like. We have designed this as a broad show to suit the tastes of the entire Indian family. Also after the Diwali vacation, people can come back and enjoy themselves watching a superhero in action.
