Talented actor Ali Asgar is enjoying his new Colors show, Comedy Nights with Kapil. “This is an interesting concept mixing stand-up comedy with live audience interaction. I will not say this has not been tried before, but yes, this is the first time that I am trying my hands at it.”
He went on to describe the plot of the show, “We have included a very loud Punjabi family in the plot. I play a very colorful dadi who is an alcoholic and her antics put her grandson Kapil (producer and lead actor Kapil Sharma) in a spot of bother.”
Here Ali added, “I play this character based on inputs obtained from observing real women who actually behave like this. As actors, we always try to imbibe what happens around us. Also a lot of improvisation happens on set.”
When asked about the thin line between being funny and vulgar, Ali replied, “I try to be naughty as many people like the ‘touch of spice’. I try to avoid going below the belt. Unfortunately many times participants in stand-up contests do cross that distinction in an attempt to win.”
We then turned our attention to his other ongoing SAB TV show, Jeannie Aur Juju, “It has really picked up steam in a short period of time. It is among a few very shows on the channel that rocks.”
At this point Ali admitted that, “One of the biggest fears that I initially had was that, given the fantasy genre viewers will not be able to relate with the characters. But luckily for us, the sweetness and innocence of the characters (my pilot avtaar Vicky and Jeannie) won it for us.”
Lastly, Ali said, “The most important ingredient of a comedy show has to be its timing. You need instant give and take. Hence you need very good co-actors for the scene to touch the comic bone of the audience. This could be one of the main reasons why Comedy Nights has opened so well (3.4).
We have a great team (Kapil, Sumona Chakravarti, Sunil Grover) and that makes all the difference.”
