The idea of online shows should be often tapped: Rajat Kaul

With the ever changing technology and newer mediums coming on the scene, the experience of TV viewing is changing. And as an experiment, MTV India, along with Movie Tunnel Productions, has launched a very interesting show on Youtube. Yes, the name of the show is Saturday Night Alright that comes with a tagline ‘A show too cool for TV’. If it manages to garner good numbers, the project will be shifted to TV as a full-fledged show. Well, the show looks different, but what caught our eyes was an actor present on the show- Rajat Kaul. If viewers remember, Rajat has been a part of 24 as the good looking assassin Maxx. When we buzzed Rajat on this venture, he smilingly averred, “It was just an experiment for me. Since nothing like this has happened in India, I thought I should give it a try. The writer is an old friend and I liked the concept of this fast and pacy show, hence I gave it my nod. While we have already aired six episodes, six more are yet to come.” So what exactly is the show about, we asked. “Well, it’s about four friends who come together every Saturday for a drink and discuss some topic. It’s a cool show and very relatable. It’s almost like buddies sitting together and discussing about life. All four of them are very different yet bond over alcohol. The show can be viewed every Saturday on the website,” he answered. Speaking of his character, Rajat said, “I play Zam who is fighting a battle with himself. Thinking himself to be superior above the rest, he looks down at people and always has his nose up in the air. His lives life on his own terms and is the devil’s advocate in this group.” “He has a negative attitude and his lack of confidence has made him stick on to himself. And so he is very defensive and is blunt and shrewd with his friends too. I think every friend group has one person like this who is too much into themselves and hardly care about feelings of others although they are good friends,” he added. So how is it working with the team? “Well, creatives Prashant Kohli and Soumyadip Chatterjee, who are also producing their first fiction show under the banner of Blink, are really creative and it’s great working with them. Also the other members of the cast are a great lot; we had loads of fun. There are still a couple of episodes to be shot which we will complete in some time,” answered Rajat. And how has been the response from friends and family with this ‘hatke’ show? “It has been good. But yes, all my friends are telling me that it’s a bit over the top and loud but then that’s how slapstick comedies are supposed to be. Although I wish we were allowed a little more time and budget, I am sure we could have offered a better show. But nevertheless, Saturday Night Alright is surely a game changer,” he observed. We also asked Rajat about his idea of online shows to which he replied, “I think it’s quite a nice idea where actors and talented people (technicians and creatives) get to showcase their talent. I think the idea should be often tapped.” We agree to that Rajat!!!
