You have read it in fairy tales. A supernatural entity grants you three wishes. These three wishes completely transform the protagonist’s life. In fairy tales you aren’t granted more than three wishes. Why? ‘Three’ across all cultures in considered to be a magical number with a spiritual significance. Certain religions attribute the holy number ‘three’ to the Holy Trinity, which may be the reason as to why we attribute that number to wishes too. In Christianity the Holy Trinity refers to the Father, the Son (Jesus Christ) and the Holy Spirit. In Hinduism it comprises of Brahma the creator, Vishnu the preserver, and Shiva the destroyer as the three highest manifestations of the one ultimate reality. The Trinity also refers to the three stages of the pagan Sun God. Also in Muslim fairy tales, the genie grants just three wishes. Three wishes have been considered to be more than enough for one person. Wishing for the fourth time isn’t allowed as the wisher is considered to be greedy. If the wisher asks for a fourth wish in fairy tales, he is often brutally punished for it. All his previous three wishes may be undone when he wishes for the fourth time. The commonest wishes when one is asked to think of three wishes are for good health, wealth, fame, prosperity, professional success, happiness, success and world peace. When we asked your favourite TV stars as to what they would wish for, they gave answers which included both common and uncommon wishes. Kratika Sengar who currently stars as Aarti in Punar Vivah said, “I wish for peace, health and wealth.” Generally people wish for ‘peace’ as the third wish. Kratika has however made ‘wealth’ the third wish, which indicates that this mature lady realises that peace is more important than material comforts. Soumya Seth who plays Aaradhya in Dil Ki Nazar Se Khoobsurat says, “I would wish for a Prince Charming to enter my life as soon as possible. I want my career to be even better. I wish that everyone in this world would be happy.” Love and romance seems to be this pretty actress’s priority. As she is already quite established in her career, she wished for more professional success as the second wish. A witty Riddhi Dogra who plays Savitri in Savitri was very original when she thought of three wishes. She said, “My first wish would be that I can teleport- what a blessing that would be! My second wish would be that I can eat all the chocolates in the world, yet not put on weight. My third wish would be that I can get three more wishes.” Savitri, the character Riddhi essays in Savitri is endowed with the telepathic power to see apparitions. She did wish for a superpower but not for one which would frighten her. It did not surprise us that this slender actress who we suppose has to watch her calories wished that she could binge on delicious chocolates albeit adding any extra pounds. The handsome, tall and muscular Aditya Redij who stars as Prithvi in Junoon - Aisi Nafrat, toh Kaisa Ishq wished for good health, happiness and enough money to live on. Though his wishes were conventional, he came across as direct and genuine while making the magical three wishes. Aleeza Khan who plays Angana in Jhilmil Sitaaron Ka Aangan Hoga was also conventional while wishing. She said, “I would like to be successful in life and have loads of money. Next, I would like to travel all over the world. Third, I would like to be happy, peaceful and tension free all my life.” Sadhil Kapoor, the cute boy who essays the role of Lord Ganesha in Devon ke Dev Mahadev depicted sweet childlike simplicity and innocence while making his three wishes. “I want to be more popular than Salman Khan and want to work with him in a meaty role in a good film. Second, I want to buy many imported cars and a very big bungalow. Third, I would wish that God gives me a lot of money so that I can help the poor and the homeless.” Rithvik Dhanjani, who plays Arjun in Pavitra Rishta seemed to be quite altruistic while wishing. Only one of the three wishes was for himself. “First and foremost, I want to fulfill my childhood dream (God Almighty knows what that is). My second wish would be to remove or at least be able to reduce the pain in someone’s life in any way possible. My third wish is to gift my parents the brightest smiles on their faces which will last till their last breath.” Hiten Tejwani who stars as Manav in Pavitra Rishta answered us with a hearty laugh, “My first wish would be to grant me three more wishes. In this way I will never be in short of wishes and I will utilize them when I really want to.” We know that in real life there is no genie or fairy to make these wishes come true. We have to work hard for our wishes to come true. It also depends on providence if our three boons will be ever granted. Nevertheless, it is fun to imagine that all the three wishes have been fulfilled. After all in this harsh reality, we still want to dream on.
