MUMBAI: Veteran actor and theatre personality, Makarand Deshpande, spoke about his long association with the stars Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan.

He attempted to dissect their enduring star power, and identified different traits about them that have made them unforgettable in the audiences’ minds, despite ups and downs. In an interview with Lehren Retro, Makarand said that Aamir has a special understanding of storytelling, and that Shah Rukh’s ‘aura’ as a star is unmatched.

Commending Shah Rukh on his record-breaking 2023, which saw him deliver the three biggest hits of his career, Makarand said, “He’s a hugely impactful person. When you meet him, you can’t help but be moved by his aura. That’s what you take home with you. I liked Jawan more than Pathaan. I thought his aura was spectacular, especially as the older character.”

About Aamir, Makarand said that his stand-out quality is his ‘ordinariness’. “Aamir has had only a handful of failures. Laal Singh Chaddha was such a fine film, and he also produced Laapataa Ladies. Aamir rarely puts a step wrong. His story selection, and his understanding of the filmmaking medium are unparalleled. Along with his directors, he’s created such a formidable body of work,” he said. In earlier interviews, he spoke about the friendship that he shared with Aamir and Shah Rukh back when they were both starting out.

“These two have worked hard over the years. They’re stars for a reason. They’re also very wise. They’re resilient. Despite setbacks, they never gave up. Shah Rukh had such a long rough patch, but then he delivered three hits in the same year. His tenacity is amazing,” Makarand concluded. Aamir was last seen in the Forrest Gump remake Laal Singh Chaddha, which proved to be a major box office bomb. Shah Rukh, on the other hand, is now planning his follow-up feature to Pathaan, Jawan and Dunki.
