Best TV Shows of 2014

As 2014 comes to an end, we round up a list of soaps that kept us hooked to the TV sets all through the year. From epic love stories to historical shows, the year saw many gems. Here's our list...take a look:

Yeh Hai Mohabbatein (Balaji Telefilms; Star Plus)

This cross-cultural love saga between a Punjabi boy and his Tamilian neighbour broke many myths about love and relationships. With a wonderful star cast and flawless direction, it's no wonder that the show has made it to the top of our list. The show stars Karan Patel and Divyanka Tripathi as leads.

Diya Aur Baati Hum (Shashi Sumeet Productions; Star Plus)

Ambitions meet middle class values in this stereotype-shattering soap. From the female lead (Deepika Singh) aspiring to be an IAS officer to her marrying a halwai (Anas Rashid) under strange circumstances, the show had many twists and turns. And kept us hooked and booked.

Kumkum Bhagya (Balaji Telefilms; Zee TV)

Based loosely on Jane Austen's popular novel Sense and Sensibility, this Indian adaptation did not let the viewers down. Apart from the plot, the show was popular due to its extensive marketing techniques.

Mahabharat (Swastik Pictures; Star Plus)

It might not have been as popular as its older cousin that came out in the 90s, but the better production design and costumes made it a hit with the audiences. With elaborate sets and a modern take on the Indian epic tale, the show managed to create a spectacle on the small screen.

Jodha Akbar (Balaji Telefilms; Zee TV)

The love saga of Jodha and Akbar made its way into the hearts of viewers. Rajat Tokas and Paridhi Sharma as Jodha and Akbar, respectively, are favourites of television lovers. Ekta with her magical touch made this project a success against all odds.

Sasural Simar Ka (Rashmi Sharma Productions; Colors)

This dollop of drama serial has been entertaining viewers from years now. Sisters Roli (Avika Gor) and Simar (Dipika Samson) and their challenging lives make for a superb watching.

Madhubala (Nautanki Films; Colors)

RK (Vivian Dsena) and Madhu’s (Drashti Dhami) intense love story found a place in audiences’ hearts. The show lost steam at its nail end but overall was an enjoyable watch.

Maharana Pratap (Contiloe Pictures; Sony Entertainment Television)

This is one historical show which has proven to be a number churner for Sony Entertainment Television. Maharana has now grown up (earlier Faisal Khan, now Sharad Malhotra), but yet he continues to charm viewers.

Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah (Neela Telefilms; SAB TV)

When talking about Indian television one has to mention SAB TV’s Taarak Mehta. The family rib-tickler has always been a huge hit amongst masses and is loved even by our PM Narendra Modi. What else can one ask for.

Tumhari Paakhi (Shashi Sumeet Productions; Life OK)

Tumhari Paakhi starring Iqbal Khan and Shraddha Arya was lapped by the masses. But the show took a hit with Iqbal hanging his boots. Nevertheless, this was one show which did good to Life OK’s programming line-up.
