Marathi actress Umadevi Nadgonde, more popularly known as Baby Shakuntala passed away at a private hospital in Kolhapur on Sunday due to age-related illness. The veteran actress was 82 when she breathed her last.
Born on 17 November, 1932, Shakuntala bagged her first role when owners of the famous Prabhat Studios asked her parents to let Shakuntala appear in one of their films as a child star at the age of six. The rest as they say is history.
Baby Shakuntala established herself in the industry through remarkable roles in 1944 Prabhat Films Marathi classic 'Ramshastri', 'Sharada' (1951), 'Chimni Pakhare' (1952), 'Aboli' (1953) and 'Maya Bazaar' (1949). Her film debut happened with Daha Vajata.
She also acted in about 40 Bollywood films, including P S Arora's 'Pardes' which starred Madhubala and Rehman, 'Nunhe Munhe' and 'Lahren'.
The octogenarian is survived by son, daughter and grandchildren. May her soul rest in peace.
