Shashi Kapoor turns 77 today. The veteran who is unfortunately bed ridden today charmed legions of movie aficionados with his variety of roles in the era gone by. Shashi shares the unique distinction of having starred in some of the most successful multistarrer blockbusters and formed a formidable partnership with Amitabh Bachchan. On his 77th birthday, we take a look at his 10 best movies.

The New Delhi Times - A movie every journalist will identify with. Shashi Kapoor ably played the no-nonsense editor who exposes the corrupt and the nexus between criminal and politicians. His role in the film clinched him the National Award for Best Actor.

Deewar - Shashi though elder to Amitabh in real life played his younger brother in the movie with great gusto. As the upright police officer, Shashi displays the perfect blend of emotions while oscillating between his duties and personal turmoil. His famous dialogue, 'Mere paas maa hai' still rankles clear in every fan's mind.

Prem Patra-  This Bimal Roy classic had Shashi playing a medical student falling in love with a fellow medic played by the lovely Sadhana. Shashi's irrepressible romantic charm gets you transfixed to your seat.

Suhaag - The iconic pairing of Amitabh and Shashi has always worked at the box-office ever since Deewar. Suhaag was a runaway hit too.

Namak Halaal - This Prakash Mehra classic saw Amitabh at his comic best while Shashi played the enigmatic royal. His chemistry with Parveen Babi and emotional reunion with Amitabh set the tone for the movie.

Satyam Shivam Sundram -  Okay, we will admit. You got to watch this one to see the oozing sensuality of Zeenat Aman. Shashi almost played the second fiddle but nevertheless Shashi-Zeenat duo too love and sensuality to a different level.

Kalyug - When Shashi Kapoor and auteur Shyam Benegal’s joined hands for their first ever celluloid reunion, magic was created. Shashi played his role of a businessman with great deft.  In this rare commercial offering from the stables of Shyam Benegal.

Paap aur Punya - When one Shashi is so much fun, imagine the craziness two Shashi Kapoors can generate. This movie saw Shashi playing both hero and villain and romancing the lovely Sharmila Tagore.

Junoon - An award winning period film of Shyam Benegal that saw Shashi essay the role of a Rajasthani local. The movie was critically acclaimed all over.

Kaala Patthar - Although the focus in this Yash Chopra classic was on Shatrughan Sinha and Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor's role as the honest engineer worked like a whiff of fresh air.
