Mr Perfectionist Aamir Khan, who is known for being very selective with his works, is all set to debut on TV. The actor didn’t jump on the bandwagon of Bollywood stars hosting shows and according to him he was waiting for the right time to spill magic on the small screen. The actor with the Midas touch will soon host a chat show on Star Plus which is expected to go on air early next year.
In an interview with Tellychakkar, Aamir talks about his show, films, marketing strategies and more. Excerpts:
Tell us something about your new show?
My new show, which is yet to be titled, is all about real life, real people, real incidents, and real emotions from day to day life. It will surely touch every Indian’s heart. It’s a very complex show and I don’t know how to describe it. But yes, it’s definitely about common people.
What’s the format of the show?
I don’t like to be bound by formats. I would rather like a fluid show. It is really difficult to explain, but I can say it will be my personal journey to explore, to know and to connect with the masses. I hope it will be an enriching experience for everyone who will watch it. You can call it a talk show but we will make it more comprehensive. The show is still in its initial stages.
Why did you choose Star Plus?
Star Plus assured me that the show will be aired on eight different channels in eight different languages. Furthermore, Uday Shankar, CEO of Star India, will help us to make the show more interesting. I am so happy that they have taken up my show and I am excited about this relationship. I have clearly said to Uday that he will be working on my show with me. And I hope we achieve our goals.
The show is still untitled. Your upcoming movie is also untitled. Why so?
Haan yaar yeh alag chakkar chal raha hai…. You actually pointed out a very right thing. If you ask my fans they will say that my next release is Dhoom 3 but the truth is I haven’t even started shooting for the film. My next release directed by Reema Kagti is a suspense film, and it is untitled as we are trying to create suspense (laughs). But hopefully we will soon zero in on a suitable title.
What’s the difference between cinema and TV?
There is a huge difference between cinema and TV. The most important one I feel is that whenever we do films we play varied characters. But in TV we portray our true individualities. So in my upcoming show viewers will get to see the real Aamir, not any character.
Why did you choose to come on TV so late compared to your contemporaries?
I have never thought about it. I think har cheez ka ek sahi waqt hota hai. I feel nervous at times to be on TV. I don’t think I am late or anything. I believe I am doing the right thing at the right moment.
Do you watch TV and who is your favourite host?
I don’t see much TV but I love watching comedy, be it TV or films. I am particularly fond of Govinda and I think he has got the best comic timing. Furthermore, I have seen many hosts who are very talented, Amitji, Shahrukh, Salman, all of them are fabulous. There are others also who are not quite popular but are definitely good.
You are known to market your films in a very unconventional way. So how will you market your upcoming show?
To be very honest we haven’t thought yet. But we will soon start brainstorming on it. And this time I have Star (channel) behind me so they will also take care of it. I believe a good story and a good marketing will always sell.
Will the show be governed by TRPs?
No. It will not be governed by TRPs.
Why don’t you attend award functions?
Frankly speaking, I’ve lost value in my heart for award functions and other events.
What are your future plans?
Right now I am concentrating on my new show. I won’t take any other projects on TV for the time being. As far as my film commitments are concerned, I have almost finished shooting Reema Kagti’s film. Only three days of underwater shooting sequence is left. I have also signed a film with Yash Raj which will go on floors in 2013.
