Society always judges a divorcee: Kamya Punjabi

Kamya speaks about Shakti, eunuchs, journey, daughter, marriage plans and more.
Kamya Punjabi

The bold and strong-minded Kamya Punjabi has made space in millions of hearts as an actress.

She is one of the TV actresses who has come a long way without anyone’s support. She is an independent woman who is taking care of her girl child single-handedly.

She has proved her mettle in acting through her previous shows namely Astitva, Maryada, Banoo Main Teri Dulhann, and Doli Armaano Ki and now she is garnering appreciation as Preeto in Colors’ Shakti.

In a chat with Tellychakkar, Kamya spoke about Shakti, eunuchs, journey, daughter, marriage plans and more.

Fortunate to be a part of Shakti

I made a right decision by being a part of such a great show Shakti. I feel fortunate. After Box Cricket League I had decided to take up something which would challenge me; also something which my fans would have never seen me playing on small screen before. My character Preeto is full of life. Though she is always against the family, she is a protective mother who loves her son a lot.

I have no qualms in playing negative roles

After seeing me in negative roles in Astitva and Maryada, people have typecast me. However, I have no problem in playing negative roles as they are more challenging. Negative characters have more weightage.

Listening struggle stories of real eunuchs are inspiring

My respect for eunuchs has grown immensely. I have shot with real eunuchs and their stories of struggle are so inspiring. The amount of pain they have is not even compared to our half of problems. They are misbehaved with at traffic signals and not accepted by the society because they are not like us. In spite of being the bread earners of the family, they are not treated well.

My love for acting will never die

I have and will also be in front of the camera. My love for acting will never die.

I have no regrets

I have no regrets in life. Jo bhi kiya dil se kiya. I have always listened to my heart.

Society always judges a divorcee

Society makes life difficult for single mothers. Even if a mother and daughter are happy in life, people still have problems with that. After doing such good roles on TV, at the end people still judge you because you are a divorcee.

People never dare to misbehave with me

One should carry attitude that no one should dare to stare at you. Never take nonsense from stalkers. If they misbehave, slap them hard. Don’t be abla nari. Look at me; how strong headed I am. People never dare to misbehave with me.

No plans to get married again

I like to live life in present and I haven’t thought about getting married again.

I want to play a role like Umrao Jaan on TV

Given a chance I would love to play Rekha’s role in Umrao Jaan on TV. I think it will suit my personality and I can carry off that role very well.

Good luck, Kamya!
