5 Unforgettable Characters in Movie and TV History

Great characters can stay with you for a lifetime, and there are hundreds of compelling creations found throughout the history of cinema and television.

From dashing heroes to loveable villains, here are just a handful of unforgettable characters that have graced our screens over the decades.

Raymond Babbit

The name Raymond Babbit might not instantly jump to mind, but you will definitely know all about this amazing individual when you realise that he went by the nickname of Rain Man.

Portrayed masterfully by Dustin Hoffman in the 1998 movie of the same name, Rain Man is remarkable not just because of his card-counting abilities which make him the bane of casinos everywhere, but also because of the humanity that is injected into him by the iconic actor at the helm.

It would be interesting to see how Rain Man fared when confronted with the cavalcade of online casino games that are available in the 21st century, rather than being limited to the hustle and bustle of land-based gambling houses.

Don Logan

Arguably one of the most terrifying characters ever committed to celluloid, Don Logan embodies the single-minded brutality of a seasoned, psychopathic gangster better than almost anyone else. Played by Ben Kingsley in the British crime drama Sexy Beast, Logan is an absolutely intimidating presence from the moment he enters the frame and begins barking orders that simply have to be obeyed.

From that point on, the film feels almost like an anxiety dream as Ray Winstone’s retired crook tries to avoid getting dragged back into the underworld, all while Logan’s irresistible anger whittles him down, leading to a suitably nail-biting climax.

Tyrion Lanister

Game of Thrones was one of the most-watched TV shows of the last decade by legitimate audiences, as well as being widely pirated. While the large-scale battles and fantastical violence definitely helped to attract plenty of viewers over the years, it was really the character-driven elements of the show that made it so successful, and Tyrion Lannister was at the heart of the juiciest parts of the political action.

Tyrion’s character arc was undeniably well crafted, starting as an overlooked and oft-ridiculed member of a powerful aristocratic family, ascending to a key player in the government of Westeros, falling from grace as an apparent traitor to the crown, then rising again as a chief advisor to a would-be usurper with a trio of dragons at her back.

Even with all these big picture points scored, the thing which really makes Tyrion memorable is his sharp tongue. Every scene featuring the littlest Lannister was a treat, and the dry delivery of actor Peter Dinklage really helped to sell his tightly written lines.

Vito Corleone

Another memorable gangster movie character who has been elevated to the status of icon, there is a lot more to Vito Corleone than meets the eye.

When the audience first encounters him in The Godfather, he is at the top of his game, in control of an empire, adored and feared by those around him in equal measure. Even an assassination attempt cannot stop him, although his ultimate demise comes about with a whimper rather than a bang.

The Godfather Part II introduces us to a young Vito, with Robert De Niro stepping in to fill the role as a counterpoint to Marlon Brando’s interpretation of the ageing mobster. We see how he evolved from struggling immigrant to low-level hood to fully fledged mafia family head, with all the complexity and nuance you would expect.

Walter White

In terms of high octane television, Breaking Bad managed to produce some of the most consistently thrilling episodes ever seen on the small screen. The exploits of terminally ill chemistry teacher-turned drug kingpin Walter White were enjoyed by millions around the world, and this character has become an undisputed heavy-hitter of pop culture in the past decade.

The balancing act between the two parts of Walter’s personality, from the mild-mannered family man to the increasingly brutal criminal, was pulled off perfectly by Bryan Cranston and even though he is absent from the well-received movie adaptation, White lives on in the imaginations of fans everywhere.
