MUMBAI: After introducing the audiences to the world of Paatal Lok, Anushka Sharma is back with a horror flick titled Bulbbul. It is directed by Anvit Dutt and premiered on 24th June on Netflix. This 94-minute horror flick stars Tripti Dimri, Rahul Bose, Avinash Tiwari, and Paoli Dam.
The story begins in 1881 Bengal, where the little Bulbbul gets married to a man who is four times her age, Indranil played by Rahul Bose. She finds her best friend in her little brother-in-law Satya, who is of her age, and enjoys listening to ghost stories narrated by him. One of them is about a witch who lives in trees and kills random people. Twenty years later, Bulbbul is a grown up girl (played by Tripti), and Satya is back from London (played Avinash Tiwari). Suddenly, random and brutal murders start happening in the village. Satya has to find out who is behind all these murders: a ghost, a demon, an animal, or a human being.
The screenplay of the movie is very dark and confusing. The initial 15 to 20 minutes are barely understandable. The the storytelling is equally confusing, and the direction is weak. Moreover, the sequences are rather predictable, and there are only a few scary moments in the movie.
The background music is really interesting and plays an important role in crafting the suspense and adding to the thrill factor.

Tripti Dimri, who plays the lead, carries the entire film on her shoulders. Her acting is real, and she looks beautiful. Avinash Tiwari, who plays Satya, has done a decent job. Rahul Bose is good too but has nothing much to offer. Kaali fame Paoli Dam is wasted in this movie.
The positives are Tripti Dimri and her performance, which hold your interest until the end. Then, the cinematography and lighting, especially in the ghost sequences, are amazing. The movie becomes a little more interesting towards the climax, and the suspense at the end is unimaginable.
The negatives include the poor screenplay and weak direction, and the audiences might lose interest at several points.
Overall, it is a one-time watch, at least for its beautiful cinematography, the few scary moments, and the strong performances of the lead
