Cinema owners disappointed over Laxxmi Bomb, Bhuj, The Big Bull, Sadak 2, and Lootcase releasing on Disney+ Hotstar

As Disney+ Hotstar announced that seven big-budget films including Akshay Kumar's Laxxmi Bomb and Alia Bhatt's Sadak 2 will release on their platform, Carnival Cinemas has released a statement expressing displeasure.

MUMBAI: Just yesterday, Akshay Kumar, Alia Bhatt, and more came together for a virtual conference. It was to announce that their respective films will release on OTT Platform - Disney+ Hotstar. Films like Sushant Singh Rajput's Dil Bechara, Alia Bhatt-Aditya Roy Kapur's Sadak 2, Akshay Kumar-Kiara Advani's Laxxmi Bomb, Abhishek Bachchan's The Big Bull, Ajay Devgn-Sanjay Dutt's Bhuj, Kunal Kemmu's Lootcase and Vidyut Jammwal’s Khuda Haafiz will release on the OTT platform in the next coming months. However, theatre owners are not happy with this.

Theatre Chain Carnival Cinemas has stated in a statement that they are disappointed with this move of the film producers of going directly to OTT platforms and skipping film's theatrical release. Mohan Umrotkar, CEO, Carnival Cinema has expressed displeasure and also mentioned that theatres will reopen soon in the country. As reported by IndiaToday, an excerpt from the statement read, "We stand by our previous statement. It is very disappointing that the filmmakers are opting digital first route when we are just steps away from the theatrical releases with the reopening of cinema halls across the country with all the necessary precautions. The economy is reopening and malls have already opened. They just need to have some more faith and patience to hold the content for the big screens, that is what it was made for."

Further, he asserted that films releasing directly on OTT will hamper the growth of the entertainment industry.
