Remembering 9/11: TV celebs and their thoughts on the dreadful day

The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 had led to United States of America being the only super power in the world. The Country's authority was challenged like never before but on 11 September 2001 when two airplanes brought down the Twin Towers. War On Terror is the new maxim on the global diplomatic and military front. Today with rising terror outfits and activities in AfPak region, uprising in Syria threatening to spread all over the wider Middle East and fears of an Israeli and American assault on Iranian nuclear installations, Mother Earth stands on the throes of more chaos and instability. In this context on the 11 anniversary of 9/11 attacks, we speak to a number of TV actors and find out the thoughts that cross their minds when they think of the dreadful day… Niaa Sharma of Ek Hazaaron Mein Meri Behna Hai (Star Plus), who was also a media student, shares, “Those images of the two jet liners slamming into the twin towers of the World Trade Centre are still fresh in my mind. I was a kid back then. That evening I just flipped on the tube and saw that ghastly incident unraveling live in the Big Apple. For about ten minutes, I had no clue what was going on. Then my folks came rushing down and screamed that Uncle Sam is under attack.” Divyanka Tripathi of Banoo Main Teri Dulhan fame feels that, “The global war on terror has changed the way we live. Physical security, metal detectors and frisking at airports especially US (JFK, Newark Dulles) have gone up several notches. The sad part of this new robust Yankie approach to immigration has been racial profiling of all easterners. We are subject to much more questioning on arrival in US of A then before. Those with Muslim surnames have to face lots of hardships. Even certain superstars have had tough time travelling to the Great Melting Pot.” Divyanka, who was last seen in Comedy Circus, also shares that, “post 9/11 Muslims all over the world including in India have been looked upon with suspicion. While the real truth is that proportion of Muslims indulging in acts of terror is very less.” Anas Rashid of Diya Aur Baati Hum (Star Plus) adds here, “Agreed that while those indulging in international acts of terror might be Muslim. But the very large number of local incidents does not have Muslim perpetrators, Naxalites etc. I genuinely feel that terrorism does not have any religion. India has been in the cross hair of these evil guys for years as we are one society where people of all religions live together in harmony. This is also a deliberate attempt to throttle our rising economic by inciting communal suspicions.” Niaa warns here, “that India will continue to face terror assaults (26/11) for we are not one. We continue to fight over narrow sectarian (Hindu –Muslim and Bihari-Maharashtrian) and identity issues (Assam) and our politicians only add fuel to this fire for petty vote bank politics.” Furthermore, Pooja Bedi feels, “9/11 and 26/11 are incidents which force us to lift our sense of not caring. It has not really changed the world like some say we just become more aware of national security.” She also castigated people who tried to compare 9/11 with a Hollywood flick. “This is very insensitive, around 3000 real lives from all over the world were lost that fateful Tuesday morning and we should not try to denigrate this tragic loss of life.” In closing Nausheen Ali Sardar states, “Although Osama Bin Laden has been taken out and the US may have had its revenge, global terror remains very much alive. Countries need to let go of ideological considerations and unite to face this global menace, lest someone crazy terrorist denote a dirty bomb (nuclear, biological and chemical) in some unfortunate city making even 9/11 look insignificant.”
