In June last year (2011), Aishwarya Rai Bachchan opted out of Madhur Bhandarkar and UTV Movies’ Heroine because of her pregnancy.
Now, almost a year later, it is heard that the beautiful and talented actress is ready to face the camera once again. And though many filmmakers have tapped her with several scripts, the actress has given her nod of approval to Mani Ratnam's adaptation of Daphne Du Maurier's famous 1938 novel Rebecca.
The novel recounts the tale of a newly married woman who is constantly compared to the first wife of her husband by the housekeeper. While she feels belittled by the shadow of the deceased lady of the house, she later realises that her husband was never in love earlier.
Needless to say, Aishwarya will play the lead role of Mrs de Winter, the protagonist in Maurier's novel. According to sources, the filmmaker is currently busy putting the script together. And if all goes well, the film will go on floors by late next year. It is expected to hit the theatres in 2014.
The association of Aishwarya and Ratnam go back a long way. Her cinematic debut Iruvar in 1997 was directed by Mani Sir. They worked again ten years later in Guru. They again worked in 2010 in Raavan.
