MUMBAI: Actress and theatre-producer Vandana Sajnani Khattar is back in action. But the last two years have not been easy as Vandana went through a difficult pregnancy and post her delivery, she experienced severe postpartum depression. In fact, she was even hospitalised and it took months for her complete recovery.

Narrating her ordeal, she said, “The last two years have been the most painful; emotionally and physically, it has been an exhausting journey. Of course, my dream of being a mother is fulfilled and I have a true miracle baby, a fighter in my life, who was just all of 700 grams when he was born. My son Yuvaan is growing well now and I am enjoying every minute of motherhood. But yes, I went through prepartum and postpartum depression and I hope no woman goes through what I went through. For the last two years, we have only been visiting hospitals and the pandemic made things worse.”.

But with help from her family and husband (actor Rajesh Khattar), she has managed to bounce back. “My husband, who has been my biggest support in all this, stood by me like a rock, looking after me in the hospital, taking care of the little baby at home, taking care of the house and all of this with no domestic staff, given the Covid situation,” she said.

Postpartum depression can get out of hand if it’s not treated on time, she says. “I have recovered, but there’s a lot that needs to be done in this area. Unfortunately, in India, mental illness is still not considered a mainstream health issue. Many women go through it but are not willing to talk about it. The need of the hour is to spread awareness, whereby women are able to identify the problem immediately, seek counselling and take medication, if required, at the earliest. I really want to tell women that neglecting it can cause a lot of harm to you and pain to others around you,” she said.

Meanwhile, the actress, who was last seen on TV in the show Kya Kasoor Hai Amla Ka is gearing up to get back to work. “After a long time, people saw me on screen in an ad that I recently shot for. I have been getting a lot of congratulatory messages since then. With so many mediums opening up, there are acting offers coming in and I should be starting on something soon. I’m looking forward to getting back to work.”, she smiled.
