In a chat with TellyChakkar Vishal spoke in brief about the job roles of Casting directors, obstacles, his advice to aspiring Casting Directors and more.
Excerpts:
Could you brief us about the role of a casting director?
Casting director first gets the storyline of the show or film and after that we get the characteristics of the character according to that we find the best suitable option and get the auditions done so that producer and channel gets its best actor.
What are the things that are required at the time of short listing an actor for any particular role?
He/she should be a good performer with a well-groomed personality and most importantly they should fit in our bill. Sometimes we need an actor who knows swimming, horse riding, or a car driving they just should be fit in our casting bill that’s it.
Have you ever faced an actor’s tantrums?
Well, while auditions 0.1% but if we talk about the shooting set so yes sometimes, they do but I can't explain what kind of tantrum.
Has it ever happened that you have cast your friends when they requested you to?
No, I have never done anything like this until they did not fit in my casting requirement. I never cast any of my friends no matter how close he/she is until they are not the perfect fit for the role.
How do you handle a crisis situation wherein the lead or a character artist wants to walk out of the project?
See this kind of thing mostly never happens because before auditions an actor gets his/her brief and after that they get creative briefs. But if something like this happens in rare cases, we ask the actor about his problems either from people or productions and if he/she wants to leave the show they have to cooperate with us until we find the replacement.
Do TRPs affect casting directors?
I don't know about others but it affects me and my seniors and other team members too. Because we do hard work in our casting, we put so much effort and either it’s in casting and making or at any other part of the show we put so much effort in making a show and if people don't like it then it affects very much.
Which show has been the best for you in terms of casting?
Every show is best because I cast them, I will not take the name of any specific show. Every show takes hard work somewhere I put my extra effort in every show better than earlier one. So, choosing any specific show for me is like a mother has to choose between her two children’s.
Your favourite actor and actress that you wish to cast in future?
Not favourite but as an actor I really like Kushal Tandon and Barun Sobti. They are superb in their craft so I would cast them and in actress I would love to cast Anjani Dhawan, she is a crush of mine.
Any suggestions for the ones who want to get into casting?
I will only give one advice to newcomers that being an actor you have to be a good observer and apart from that a good reader and learn every possible thing. Because the casting requirement has always something specific so if you know something additional then it will be helpful for your selection. i would suggest those people who want to come into casting that please if you are looking for 10 to 6 kinds of job then please don't join the casting because casting can come anytime, sometimes it’s in early morning 6:00 or late night at 1:00. You must be good in time management otherwise you will leave the casting or the hope for your personal time.
