Sneh Binny: Social media can be both inspiring and devastating, there are definitely two sides to it

MUMBAI: Social media has revolutionised life in more ways than one. In times of Covid-19, it has not only become an essential medium of communication helping everyone stuck at the confines of their homes to not just connect with the outer world but also express themselves freely, says entrepreneur Sneh Binny.

“At this point of time when Covid-19 has restricted our physical movement, most of us have become more active on social media than we were before. It has influenced people in various ways, helps us connect with our loved ones and also lets us know what is happening around the world. And, social media can be both inspiring and devastating, there are definitely two sides to it,” he says.

The number of followers has become an obsession on social media, especially for actors, influencers and every popular person out there. It has become a competition as to who would get the maximum number of followers first.

“Most of the people with a huge number have fake followers. It seems like I have followers who show it off and that will get me work. But I think the numbers are shown to indicate who all are very popular. If you remove them then everyone becomes equal. These numbers also help us trace the genuine accounts, and that is the purpose. But some people have taken it to another level,” he adds.

The virtual world is a place where people express their identity to many others, it’s a great place, but the greatness is fading with how it is being misused, according to Sneh. He also feels it has become an ego massage tool and it has become a fixation with many thinking about what they should post on a daily basis.

“It’s definitely a task for celebs to decide what to put on social media. Personally I don’t really go out of the way to put things on my accounts. I feel my real life is more important than virtual life,” adds Sneh, who co-owns Delhi Binny’s Brigade, a part of the Tennis Premier League.

As for the actors he follows on social media and he says, “I follow Disha Patani and Nora Fatehi. They have interesting posts to share. I like their content.”
