Marriage is like getting murdered or committing suicide: Umesh Pherwani

Since, stand-up comedian Umesh Pherwani is a good friend of mine, hence, as a guest editor at Tellychakkar.com, I planned to interview him. In a conversation, he talked about his jokes and divorce with wife Suniti. Umesh is currently busy hosting shows, as he told us, “I am tied up for the next three months as they say, make hay while the sun shines.” So how difficult is it to make people laugh? “When you’re being paid to make people laugh, you don’t have any other option but to make them laugh. And that’s exactly what I do,” Umesh averred. You’ve travelled around as your work demands it. So tell us the best country that you’ve been to. “It’s Amsterdam. Every time I say this, it comes as a surprise to people as they wonder if people there understand Indian humour. But believe me, there are a lot of Indians in Amsterdam who love the kind of humour we dish out,” he observed. Tell us the best and the worst thing about getting married, “Best and the worst thing about being married is not getting married! Whether it’s love marriage or an arranged one, stay away from it as it’s more like getting murdered or committing suicide.” Was it difficult going through a public divorce? Was it also because most of your jokes were on your wife? “No, that wasn’t the reason as she is a very sporting person. She never ever gets offended with my jokes. There was something else that did not go right. And I believe that at times even two good people together can’t make a beautiful world.” Okay…moving on…what pick up line would you use on me? “Is your father from Mars because you’re out of this world?” he laughed. Lastly, what would you want written on your grave stone? “Here lies Umesh Pherwani, he made people laugh …. now he is somewhere making the angels laugh,” Umesh ended.
