Mocking a farmer on a hunger strike, Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar at a public rally in Pune on 7 April (2013) said, ‘If there is no water in the dam, what should we do? Urinate in it?’. The remark has sparked of nationwide protest for what is seen as an example of a politician’s crass insensitivity towards the common man’s distress. And the comment has also angered many in the Bollywood industry.
Kabir Bedi: “Ask Ajit Pawar how much he would pee if he had no water to drink. He has pissed off the whole of Maharashtra, the focus of India’s biggest irrigation scam where thousands of crores have been pissed away.”
Naseeruddin Shah: “Snip off his foreskin.”
Ashoke Pandit: “The entire nation is urinating abuses on him for making a mockery of one of the biggest human tragedies. This is politics at its lowest ebb, even lower than the water levels of Maharashtra’s dams. Where is this country heading? Farmers being abused is unpardonable. He should be sacked from politics.”
Anusha Rizvi: “There is really no reason for him to make such an effort. He should piss in a glass and drink it.”
Shailendra Singh: “Mr Ajit Pawar is not well. He needs to rest.”
Ketan Mehta: “Ditto. We should do unto him what he wants to do to the dams.”
Pritish Nandy: “This is gross. Frankly, he should step down voluntarily if he has some self-respect and dignity.”
Shatrughan Sinha: “He is supposed to be one of the richest men in Maharashtra. For him to come up with such a poor account of himself is a shame. I think Mr Ajit Pawar has leaked out the best-kept secret of Indian politics. That many of our politicians don’t care a ‘dam’ about the poor.
