Deepika Singh's 'sisterly love'

Normally here in India, younger ones are not allowed to wed till their elder siblings are married. Normally here in India, younger ones are not allowed to wed till their elder siblings are married. But Deepika Singh aka Sandhya of Star Plus’ hit show Diya Aur Baati Hum in which she fought with traditions to become a cop, had to battle social norms in real life too. This to successfully convince her Delhi-based parents to get her younger sister Purva married despite the fact that she is still single. “Currently, I am very busy with my show and since my sister has already found her love, I decided to let her go ahead and get married. Initially, it was quite tough for mom and dad weren’t ready for her betrothal the main reason being that I was not married. But I pushed them. I have always felt responsible for the welfare of my three younger siblings (2 sisters and a brother),” Deepika observes. “Also what added to the complication was that my brother-in-law Sunny belongs to a separate caste (we are Rajputs while he is a Sindhi). However I stood my ground. My sister who is doing Masters through a correspondence course knew that Sunny owns a restaurant in Powai since the past two years. Since both were committed to each other, I felt that they should go ahead and get married. Agreed, she is quite young, but then I am sure that she can finish her education post marriage as well,” she adds. According to the actress, the goodwill that her positive character generated helped her a long way in getting all the wedding arrangements done. “My co-actors helped me a lot as well. I am sure that I will be able to use this experience later in my marriage as well.” Talking about the schedule, the excited Deepika reveals, “It has been a very hectic week. We just had the wedding reception on Tuesday night. Prior to this week, we had the sangeet ceremony when we had lots of fun as well.”
