Audience Perspective: Television shows have lost personality; everything and everyone looks the same

The setting, the heroes, heroines, shows, everything looks just the same everywhere. Why should we watch different shows and not just one; they are just a copy-paste anyway.

MUMBAI :  Television had always been the grandest of mediums and has been the audience's go-to for entertainment. The entertainment landscape has changed a lot over the years.

Now, audiences want fresh tales of love and drama and there is a new barrage of actors taking over TV shows. While the longevity of shows has gone out, the entry of new-age thinkers has definitely helped to tell the stories of hope and entertainment to the audiences, or atleast that’s what we hoped for.

The shows used to be a go-to for entertainment, and the stories were exciting.

So, the question is, why are present-day TV shows not exciting anymore, is it because of similar storylines, the same-looking cast, or mediocre storytelling? Well, it is the combination of all of it and also that people now have options, they are spoilt with choice of content. So, there was a time where TV shows delved into serious societal issues, and now it has just spiraled into the same love story and damsel in distress era again. So, the bottom line is that if TV shows want longevity, they need to work on the content, and that is it.

When we compare shows like Rajjo, Faltu, Banni Chow, and Saavi Ki Saavari, you can easily figure out what we mean when we say, everything looks the same, the heroes all have lined beards, and none of them are easily swayed by their really ambitious and rural heroines. These are brooding heroes who make a lot of money and don’t like smiling and the best part is they love being rude to their heroines, questioning their love and ambition time over time and what great entertainment that is.

Shows are stuck in a time loop of trends and rural baiting; yes, we call it rural baiting because all of these heroines are set up from rural households and they are simple girls but they do have ambitions and what they are chastised for.

The crux of the situation is, the setting, the heroes, heroines, shows, everything looks just the same everywhere. Why should we watch different shows and not just one; they are just a copy-paste anyway.

Neha Randhawa says, “ You cannot tell the difference between the shows if you put them on mute and just flip the channels, and I think that says a lot”.

Riya Yadu says, “ Why do they just change the looks of the guy, or the girl, and why does the hero have to have a lot of money and the girl comes from a poor household”.

Swarna Yadav says “ Its the same old story of whatever works, just tweak it a little bit and keep rerunning, that is what’s happening with the show’”.

Aarti Soni says, “ These shows also have this pattern where at first they show the heroine to be a nice and independent character who loses sight of who she is and what she should do next only for the sake of a boy”.

Lalita Ranka says, “ TV does not have that same charm anymore, why should watch a show that has the cast playing the role of the mother, sister, and cousin at the same time? They all look the same. TV has just stopped thinking of young audiences and catering to the older demographic."

While TV is out of existence any time soon, the grandiosity of TV shows and stars has definitely gone down. It is a very conflicting position to be in because there are two sides to the same coin. So, if there is not originality soon enough, chances are that people might loose interset faster.
