MUMBAI: Manish Gulati is currently seen in CAT which started streaming on Netflix on 9th December 2022. The actor plays the role of a gangster named Monty Singh in it, and he is busy garnering praise for his performance in it.
TellyChakkar recently interacted with Manish and spoke to him about the kind of roles he wants to do, the actors and directors he wants to work with, and more…
When did you decide that you want to become an actor?
I have been performing since my school days, but never thought I would become a professional actor. It happened to me in college. I was in my first year of Mass Communication and a few of our seniors started a theatre group in the college. I was very heartbroken when they called us for auditions. They told a friend of mine that you are very good-looking, they told another friend that you can play with your eyes, and when they looked at me it was disappointing for them as I was not good-looking or charming. They didn’t say anything to me, and that hit me. But, the moment we started doing the rehearsals and I started shining as an actor, my director came to me and said, ‘When you act, I stop and look at you’. So, that thing gave me confidence and after that, I did theatre professionally.

What kinds of roles are you looking forward to?
I want to experiment and explore all the genres. In CAT, I have played the role of a gangster, and I have explored that. Now, I want to do more rom-com, dark comedies, and other things. I want to show another side of myself where I can show that I play a cute-looking boy, do romance; something like a character that Irrfan sir played in The Lunchbox. So, I want to do different roles, and not get stuck in one genre.
You are new in the industry, so do you have a list of actors and directors you want to work with?
I became an actor because of Shah Rukh Khan; I have grown up watching his films. For me two people that inspired me to be an actor are Shah Rukh Khan and Shahid Kapoor (for his dance). So, these are the two actors I want to work with. For directors, the list is long, but I recently saw Qala and I want to work with Anvita Dutt. I want to do a Rohit Shetty film for sure, a Dharma Production film. I want to work with Rajkumar Hirani; I met him when he was filming PK. Then there’s Vishal Bhardwaj and Sanjay Leela Bhansali. So, these are the guys I want to work with.
