Exclusive! “I have done a lot of characters and different type but nothing like this before “, Baake aka Sudeep Sarangi of Durga

MUMBAI :  The legacy of the late Bondita and Anirudh Roy Chowdhary from one of the most loved television shows ‘Barrister Babu’ lives on through their daughters in Colors’ 'Durga Aur Charu'. While Charu is her mother’s soul, Durga is her shadow. The show outlines the journey of the two sisters, who are bound by blood but are starkly different because of their diametrically opposite upbringing, after being separated as children.

The channel has roped in popular actors Aurra Bhatnagar and Vaishnavi Prajapati to play the lead roles as two sisters - Durga and Charu respectively.

Sudeep Sarangi plays the role of Baake in the show Durga Aur Charu. He is the one who raises Charu after she gets separated in the accident.

He made his acting debut as the antagonist in the 2003 Tamil movie Kaadhal Kondein. Following the popularity of the movie, Sudeep played similar roles in Ennavo Pudichirukku (2004), and Kadhale Jayam (2005). But unlike his debut movie, which received poor reviews, these movies did much better. However, he later got employed in a business after his father fell ill and his brother's company struggled. Later, he received offers to play characters in the Hindi television series Baba Aiso Varr Dhoondo, Mahadev, and Prithviraj Chauhan. He played a fleeting part in Sahara One's Haunted Nights.

TellyChakkar got in touch with the actor to talk about following the legacy of Barrister Babu, his expectations, and his experience on shooting the show.

What made you say to this show and this character?

This character has a lot of emotions attached to it. Baake is a tamashawala who performs on the street. It has a level of emotion attached to it as he loves Charu a lot. Although she is not his own daughter, he has a lot of guilt that he was the cause of the accident, and that he knows that the people involved in the accident were rich. He thought that everyone involved had died, but that was not the case. He is a simple man who wants to do a lot for Charu but is unable to do so. The bonding between Charu and my character is very strong. There are a lot of subtle emotions and he is a very simple guy. I have done many characters of various types but nothing like this before. You will see a different type of Sudeep in the show.

What kind of roles do you prefer: negative, positive, or something in between?

For me, every kind of role is important and is close to my heart. But what I believe is that when you portray a negative character or a character that lies in a grey shade; that attracts people. I have also observed from when I have played negative characters, those characters get people talking. Even if they hate those characters, they have opinions about them. I try to put some humour in those characters whenever I play negative roles, because I think that adds flavour to the role. I have gotten a chance to do that early in my career.

How has your experience been like shooting the show till now?

My experience has been amazing. I believe that children are born actors, but we try to make lines and portray things in a different way. But they are spontaneous; they don’t overthink it, and there is originality in their performances. So for me, the two girls have been brilliant and all the artists that I have performed with and the environment has been so positive that it has been a great experience.
