MUMBAI: Yesterday on 29th January 2023, the India’s women under-19 cricket team won the first edition of the ICC Under-19 Women's T20 World Cup. India's tournament squad was announced on 5 December 2022, and the team fought their way to the top and finally beat England in the finals, taking home the trophy. This is indeed a great achievement for the team and the country!
On the onset of their win, let us find out a little more about Shafali Verma, the captain of the Indian women's under-19 cricket team.
In 2019 at the age of 15, Shafali became the youngest cricketer to play in a Women’s Twenty20 international match representing India. Later in 2021, she became the youngest player (both male and female) to play for India in all forms of International cricket (Test, ODI, and T20). Later in 2022, she again broke records by becoming the youngest player to complete 1000 runs in international T20.
She has had many more outings professionally in international cricket as well. She was even ranked as the number one batters in women’s T20I cricket prior to the 2020 ICC Women's T20 World Cup held in Australia. She has even played for India in the cricket tournament held at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England. She has indeed risen to the occasion and made India proud more than once.
We are proud of India’s women under-19 cricket team and their victory at the first Women’s Under-19 Cricket World Cup.
