MUMBAI : Pushpa: The Rise – Part 1, KGF franchise, Kantara, Liger, and RRR; all these films are pan-India movies. Apart from Liger, all of them had left a strong mark at the box office. Well, apart from being a pan-India film, there’s one more common thing in these movies, and that is no meaty role for female leads.
A few days ago, we had written about how Kiara Advani was not mentioned in the announcement video of Game Changer which stars Ram Charan as the male lead. Today, let’s discuss the positioning of female leads in South films.
The above-mentioned movies starred Rashmika Mandanna, Srinidhi Shetty, Sapthami Gowda, Ananya Panday, and Alia Bhatt. All these female leads had nothing much to do in the film apart from being just the love interest in the film. We can understand that the protagonist of the movie is a male lead, but then, why can’t female leads also have a better role?
In some South films, the actresses are actually just there for four scenes and two songs, and after a point in some films, the female lead’s character just vanishes and re-enters in the climax.
We aren’t saying that there are no female centric movies being made down South. There are filmmakers who are taking risks and making movies with South actresses in the lead, but they are very few.
Let’s talk about the recently released film Dasara. The movie stars Nani as the male lead and Keerthy Suresh as the female lead. While Keerthy has a very meaty role to play, she wasn’t much seen in the promotions. It was Nani who was seen going all out and promoting the film without his female lead in the movie.
Do you think that South filmmakers aren’t giving the female leads the credit they deserve? Let us know in the comments below...
