RIP! Malayalam film producer Parayarukandi Vettath Gangadharan died at age of 80

The world of Indian cinema said goodbye to Parayarukandi Vettath Gangadharan. The producer is renowned for his enormous contributions to Malayalam cinema, was hospitalized a week prior owing to age-related illnesses.

MUMBAI: Parayarukandi Vettath Gangadharan, a renowned Malayalam film producer, passed away peacefully at the age of 80 at a private hospital. The world of Indian cinema said goodbye to him. The producer is renowned for his enormous contributions to Malayalam cinema, was hospitalized a week prior owing to age-related illnesses.

Gangadharan was the younger brother of P V Chandran, the managing editor of Mathrubhumi, and was born in 1943 to Madhavi Sami and P V Sami, a well-known businessman and the creator of the KTC Group of Companies. Mathrubhumi and the late producer shared a tight relationship as a director.

He created 22 enthralling Malayalam films under his distinguished production company, Grihalakshmi Films, and won numerous major awards, including two National Film Awards and five Kerala State Film Awards. His legacy includes timeless masterpieces like Angadi (1980), Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha (1989) by Mammootty, Kattathe Kilikkoodu (1983) by Mohanlal, Thooval Kottaram (1996) by Mohanlal, Kochu Kochu Santhoshangal (2000) by Jayaram, Achuvinte Amma (2005) by Notebook (2006), to name a few. The world's last film he produced was Janaki Jane (2023).

The Nargis Dutt Award-winning movie Kanakkinavu, praised for its depiction of national harmony, is the best example of Gangadharan's cinematic prowess. He also received praise for Shantham, which won the Best Feature Film award.

In addition to his contributions to film, Gangadharan founded the International Film Producers Association (FIAPF) and held important leadership positions in the industry. He was the chairman of the Kerala State Film Development Corporation, the president of the Film Federation of India, the head of the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce, and the head of the Kerala Film Chamber of Commerce.

The production company, S-Cube Films, is co-managed by Gangadharan's devoted wife, P V Sherien, and their three children, Shenuga Jaythilak, Shegna Vigil, and Sherga Sandeep.

At 10 am, Gangadharan's home in Azhchavattom will receive the lifeless remains of this cinematic genius. At 4 pm, the public is invited to pay their respects at the Town Hall. The cremation, which is slated for Saturday, will serve as the final farewell and signal the end of an era in Indian cinema.
