MUMBAI: The prominent producer-filmmaker, Ekta Kapoor became the first Indian winner of the prestigious Directorate Award at International Emmy Awards 2023. The Award was bestowed to her by Deepak Chopra at the ceremony.

Ekta Kapoor was laurelled with the Directorate Award for her innovative career and the significant impact she had on Indian Television. She spoke to India Today post receiving the award. She was seen in a light orange-coloured adorned outfit, holding the Emmy in her hand. She got emotional, and said, “This is for you, India. We are bringing home your Emmy.”

Ekta Kapoor also took to her Instagram account to share a short video clip that showed her Emmy Award. “India I’m bringing home YOUR Emmy @iemmys,” she wrote.

Before receiving the award Ekta Kapoor in her conversation with India Today said. “I think art and writing and storytelling have a far bigger impact than we gave it credit. Now to be honoured by this global platform on a global stage, I just feel a little overwhelmed and humbled,” she said, further adding that this honour has made her feel ‘responsible’.

She expressed her desire to use her voice for altruistic purposes and bring out the stories of people who are unheard.

It was in August the same year that Ekta Kapoor broke the news with her nomination, and wrote, “Overflowing with humility and exhilaration as I receive this recognition. The award holds a cherished spot in my heart, symbolising a journey that transcends work. Representing my nation globally through this esteemed platform is an honour beyond words.”

In a turn of events, Jim Sarbh and Shefali Shah, who garnered nominations for their outstanding performances in "Rocket Boys" and "Delhi Crime Season 2," unfortunately fell short in their respective categories at the 2023 International Emmy Awards. However, the night saw comedian Vir Das clinching the Best Comedy award for his stellar Netflix Special, "Vir Das: Landing." Vir Das graciously shared this accolade with the popular British teen sitcom, "Derry Girls-Season 3," making it a memorable moment at the prestigious event.
