Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire Records Punctuate a Huge Year for Entertainment Beyond the US

MUMBAI: Last year, RRR from S.S. Rajamouli proved an international sensation, simply spreading by word of mouth. Some in Western countries discovered it through post-cinematic platforms like Netflix, while in closer countries like Japan, RRR became the highest-grossing Indian film ever. In Japan alone, RRR made $5 million, smashing the $3 million record held by Muthu.

In 2023, productions and creations drawn in from beyond the United States have enjoyed a particularly strong year. Perhaps the finest example again comes from India. This time, and to punctuate a superb year for non-American media, Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire has only gone and exceeded the collection of RRR after another movie, Jawan, had already made waves.

With 2023 now concluded, here’s how Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire made it one of the most prominent years for entertainment beyond the borders of North America.

Eastern cinema gets win after win

In September 2023, Jawan made it very clear that Indian cinema has a tremendous amount of momentum right now. As we detailed at TellyChakkar.com, the teaser trailer alone was enough to whip up hype. Not only did it lay claim to a whole host of international box-office records, but it also overtook RRR by October. Boasting a domestic haul of $14.4 million, following a $6.1 million opening, and $136 million worldwide, Jawan became the second-biggest Bollywood movie ever. To hit this record, it had to climb past Pathaan’s $130 million.

Just a couple of months later, Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire dethroned the likes of Jawan and Animal on its first day as the year’s biggest opener with $22 million. Just a week after its December 22 release, the Prashanth Neel epic action flick had already surpassed $50 million. Not only does it look set to challenge the collection of Jawan, but with filming set to commence in March 2024, in 2025, Salaar: Part 2 would appear to be primed for another record-setting run.

Beyond India, Japan enjoyed a particularly prolific end to 2023. First came Godzilla Minus One, which obliterated every single modern Hollywood rendition of the kaiju in the eyes of critics. Great word of mouth had cinemas across the world book more screenings, and in the US, it boasts the record for the biggest single-day haul for an overseas live-action film with $1.2 million. Before the end of the year, Godzilla Minus One had already exceeded $64 million worldwide. If reviews like that from PasteMagazine.com are to be believed, The Boy and the Heron is good enough to potentially surpass even that of Godzilla Minus One if it gets the screenings.

Popularity of overseas gaming highlighted

India has rapidly become one of the largest gaming markets in the world. Thanks to the prevalence of smartphones, mobile gaming is booming across India, but it’s not just the free-to-play apps that have risen to prominence. Powered by platforms that collect, review, and recommend sites, online casino gaming has found a vast audience in India. As detailed by CasinoReviews.com, sites need to be rigorously checked, tested first-hand, and vetted by teams of experts to be recommended.

It’s at these sites, which often appeal to an international audience, that you’ll find the hit games Live Teen Patti, Poker Teen Patti, and Live Andar Bahar. Both Teen Patti and Andar Bahar are classic Indian games, and now, people around the world are playing them thanks to studios wanting to directly appeal to the massive Indian audience. These games can be played on PC, but it’s in this ultimate space for video gaming that other creations have risen to the fore.

Steam, the largest launcher for PC gaming, released its tiers for the best-selling games of 2023 to round off the year. In the highest tier, Platinum Tier, there were two smash-hit games developed in Poland and Belgium. CD Projekt Red will be glad to see the once-maligned Cyberpunk 2077 come roaring back, but the outright top game of the year was Baldur’s Gate 3 from Belgian creators Larian Studios. The Game of the Year set a new bar for turn-based RPGs.

Perhaps 2023 will be the start of more huge hits coming from the rest of the world, especially within the US market.
