Junaid opened up on his debut film Maharaj saying, “I cannot explain in words what I’m feeling right now. Maharaj has been a long and wild journey for me, but all’s well that ends well I guess.”

He added, “Maharaj was made with a lot of love and respect and passion and I’m glad that the film and my performance is striking a chord with audience at large. I know I have miles to go and lots to improve upon. I just hope I get a cast and crew as supportive in all my future work.”

Directed by Sidharth P Malhotra and produced by YRF Entertainment, the historical drama Maharaj is based on one of the most significant legal disputes in Indian history: the 1862 Maharaj Libel Case. It stars debutante Junaid Khan in important roles alongside Shalini Pandey and Jaideep Ahlawat, and includes a special appearance by Sharvari. Based on actual events that happened in pre-independence India in 1862, Maharaj chronicles the travels of Karsandas Mulji, one of India's most notable social reformers.

Prior to its premiere, the movie ended up in a legal limbo, which caused a one-week delay in its release. The stay order was granted in response to a plea submitted on behalf of Lord Krishna devotees and members of the Pushtimarg sect, who are followers of Vallabhacharya, according to an article in India Today. According to the petition, the company that tells the tale of the 1862 Maharaj Libel Case may encourage violence against the sect's adherents and disrupt public order.
