MUMBAI : Director Mahesh Bhatt is a man with numerous stories, but one particularly fascinating one comes from a time in his career when he was feeling disillusioned with the craft of filmmaking. Bhatt made the historic choice to leave the film 'Ghulam,' which starred Aamir Khan as the lead, after concluding that films were not important enough for him to devote his entire life to.

Mahesh Bhatt was originally slated to direct the popular film 'Ghulam.' Bhatt recalls a serious conversation he had with Aamir Khan in which the actor asked if he could channel all of his enthusiasm and dedicate his life to the making of 'Ghulam.' The conversation took place in an interview with a renowned news outlet. Bhatt declined him, citing a significant change in his commitment to filmmaking.
“I chose to walk away from it. I told Aamir, I didn’t think movies meant so much to me that I would dedicate my entire life to it. It doesn’t mean so much to me, and I’d be lying if I said otherwise,” Bhatt shared, noting that Aamir was “quite stunned” by his integrity and honesty.
Bhatt then recommended Vikram Bhatt for the directorial role. “I told him if there is one person who can give his life to it, it is Vikram Bhatt. When I saw ‘Ghulam,’ I announced on stage that he made a better film than I could!” Bhatt reflected, praising Vikram’s dedication and skill.
He continued, “That is the victory of a master… That he may give an unlit candle his flame, but when the flame becomes a radiant sun, you bask in that, it is wonderful.” The gesture expresses Bhatt's happiness at having guided Vikram and seen him succeed.
Mahesh Bhatt's choice to leave 'Ghulam' and his support of Vikram Bhatt afterward highlights an important turning point in his life and career. It represents a time when he reevaluated his goals and decided to help the next generation of filmmakers.
