Even after a rise in women-centric movies, what is something that’s missing according to fans?

Hindi cinema is known for amazing movies and in the 70s, 80s and 90s, we got to see countless movies wherein the negative leads were feared or hated by the majority of the audience and even if not, the characters were definitely not looked up to in an inspiring way. The heroes or male leads were always celebrated and female leads were admired for ‘nazakat’.

MUMBAI: Hindi cinema has gone through phases and the fans have observed a lot of changes, be it in movies, music, actors or directors or anything that really affects the nature of cinema. Time and again, it has proven that there’s always more to entertain the audience with. Even a teenage drama from the 90s would be really different from the teenage drama of the current age and that’s just how time works.

With the changing landscape of Hindi cinema, we need to understand that there are changes which are affected by various factors and sometimes, it is those changes that further affect the audience. Hindi cinema is known for amazing movies and in the 70s, 80s and 90s, we got to see countless movies wherein the negative leads were feared or hated by the majority of the audience and even if not, the characters were definitely not looked up to in an inspiring way. If you remember well, the actresses of earlier times were portrayed in various ways and not necessarily ‘desi’ as how so many people now believe. Amrita Singh’s character from ‘Chameli Ki Shaadi’, Rekha’s character from ‘Khoon Bhari Maang’, Nargis Dutt’s character from ‘Mother India’ and more such character memorable characters are an example of how uniquely and strongly women were portrayed.

Times have not changed but evolved and in the process, there comes a point where there is equal to no relation between the point where the process started and the point where it has reached. One good thing to note is that actresses have more significant contribution in movies now compared to earlier. We now have more women-centric movies than ever and more importantly, these women-centric movies even have great openings.
However, there is a section of fans who appreciate these changes but still miss the ‘nazakat’ and ‘adah’. There are also opinions online that everyone looks almost the same and there aren’t unique qualities or features.
It seems these are simply pros and cons of evolution.
