In our exclusive interview with Tovino Thomas and Director Jithin Lal prior to the release of their pan-India Malayalam movie, ARM, in theaters, the duo opened up on drawing inspiration from Marvel movies and Directors like James Cameron for the visual and aesthetic feel of their film.

Jithin Lal said, “I watch everyone’s film. I have never been to a film school or anything. I was continuously watching lot of films. I was a software engineer then I quit that and I was watching this IMDB 350 for 6-7 months. Daily I will be watching 3 films. So at that time we are not watching as a director, we are just watching it just like an audience but it will be in our head when we are working on our script or something like developing of the world building, (subconsciously) it will come. I was watching the masterclass of James Cameron, and like that I was watching all these things and I get something for my film. Also for the Marvel films, how they pre-work is going on. From that I got this pre-vision thing. So in Marvel they make the full film previously. And then only the director will be on-board so I was making that pre-visionalisation not only to convince, it’s also so that the shoot will be easy. If we are making a pre-visionalisation and without it may take somewhere like 15 days shoot, if we have it, it can take 10 days.”

Tovino Thomas added, “It’ll be easier for me also. I know how this movie is going to look and after watching that pre-visionalization I have this sense of responsibility… it helps me perform better definitely because I know what the shot is. In that shot, from that pre-visionalization, that animated movements I can build my own performance on top of that.”

This was our conversation with Tovino Thomas and Jithin Lal about their upcoming movie A.R.M
