Malishka Mendonsa on playing Sarojini Naidu: “I spent up to 9 hours a day in makeup” for Sony LIV’s Freedom at Midnight

MUMBAI: Sony LIV’s much-anticipated series Freedom at Midnight is set to make its debut this November, and fans are eagerly awaiting the release date. Based on the renowned book by Dominique Lapierre and Larry Collins, the series brings to life the pivotal moments of India’s independence, with a stellar cast portraying iconic historical figures. Among the standout casting choices is Malishka Mendonsa, who steps into the shoes of Sarojini Naidu, a revolutionary leader in India's freedom struggle.

To capture Naidu’s older appearance, Malishka spent up to 4 hours each day in the makeup chair, perfecting the prosthetics. Reflecting on the process, she shared, “Wearing prosthetics was a unique challenge. I would spend hours in makeup each day—one day is was 9 hours —just to get the prosthetics right. It wasn’t only about looking like Sarojini Naidu; I also had to cope with the practical difficulties—melting prosthetics in the sun, sweating on my face underneath it, needing to stay in the shade and sitting in front of an AC for my face all the time to stop it from melting off.”

She also expressed gratitude for the unwavering support of the Freedom at Midnight team, crediting them for the success of her transformation. "From the makeup artists to our director, Nikkhil Advani, everyone played a key role in ensuring every detail was perfect. That dedication was constant on set—every actor and crew member worked together for the greater good of the show. Despite the challenges, the results are breathtaking. I can’t wait for people to see it—it’s something truly special.”

Produced by Emmay Entertainment (Monisha Advani & Madhu Bhojwani) in association with StudioNext, the show is spearheaded by Nikkhil Advani as the showrunner and director. The series features a stellar cast, including Sidhant Gupta as Jawaharlal Nehru, Chirag Vohra as Mahatma Gandhi, Rajendra Chawla as Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Arif Zakaria as Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Ira Dubey as Fatima Jinnah, Malishka Mendonsa as Sarojini Naidu, Rajesh Kumar as Liaquat Ali Khan, KC Shankar as V.P. Menon, Luke McGibney as Lord Louis Mountbatten, Cordelia Bugeja as Lady Edwina Mountbatten, Alistair Finlay as Archibald Wavell, Andrew Cullum as Clement Attlee, Richard Teverson as Cyril Radcliffe in pivotal roles.

Get ready to witness history unfold like never before with Freedom at Midnight, coming this November only on Sony LIV!
