Mishkat Varma opens up about playing a prideful rebel with a cause in COLORS’ ‘Ram Bhavan’

MUMBAI: Every house has its stories, but in a unique role reversal, COLORS open the doors to a mansion bursting with power struggles in its new show, ‘Ram Bhavan’. The upcoming family drama pulls back the curtains on an explosive feud of pride, wit, and egos within the walls of this tumultuous abode. Welcome to Ram Bhavan, where Om, the rebellious self-styled 'hisaab ka bada pakka', struts around with a prideful swagger, but yearns for a life built on his knack for jugaad. Isha, unlike Om, is patient and grounded, determined to work her way up the status ladder with a resilience forged from a fall from riches. With nothing in common, Om and Isha find themselves with a shared enemy - Gayatri, Om’s manipulative bhabhi and Isha’s ruthless boss. Gayatri, the tyrant of Ram Bhavan, holds the monetary strings and, with them, the fate of her sasural. Her reign of terror is challenged by Om, her jugaadu brother-in-law, who fights to reclaim his family’s dignity and secure a government job as a symbol of his worth, enduring the scathing humiliation doled out by his bhabhi. Meanwhile, Isha, the rooted princess, stands as a picture of patience against Gayatri’s unwarranted wrath. After having fallen from riches to bankruptcy, Isha proves her professional potential despite facing relentless oppression by her brutal boss. Provoked by Gayatri’s constant belittling, Om and Isha unite in an unlikely alliance, threatening to blow the roof off their oppressor’s empire. Will Om and Isha manage to knock down Gayatri’s dominance or will they be forced to take shelter in her absolute power? Starring Mishkat Varma as Om, Khushi Rajendra as Isha, and Samiksha Jaiswal as Gayatri, ‘Ram Bhavan’ premieres on 29th January and thereafter airs every night at 8.30 pm only on COLORS.

1.Tell us about the show.
‘Ram Bhavan’ is a gripping family drama that revolves around a match of wit, ego, and resilience, all within the grand, secret-filled walls of a sprawling titular bungalow in Prayagraj. Gayatri, the dominating bahu of the Vajpayee family is a General Manager at a reputed restaurant and she reigns over the entire family because she holds the monetary strings of the household. Her authority is challenged by Om, her rebellious brother-in-law, who resents her for condemning the family members and using her financial prowess against them, while he strives to secure a government job to prove his worth. Meanwhile, Isha, Gayatri’s humble yet strong-willed employee, is a rooted princess who has fallen from riches to bankruptcy. Despite Gayatri's insecurities driving her to make Isha's life difficult, Isha handles her with patience. Together, Om and Isha find themselves in an unexpected alliance against Gayatri. Ram Bhavan becomes the centre stage where purpose, pride, and power struggles brew into a clash with Om and Isha on one side and Gayatri on the other.

2.Tell us about your character.
Om is a character full of pride and a deep sense of justice. Born as the third son of a once-wealthy family, he is annoyed by Gayatri's dominance. He is determined to get back at Gayatri, who he refers to as GM Sahiba, for humiliating his family and oppressing them with her financial prowess. He's prideful and a bit of a jugaadu, always coming up with unconventional solutions to problems. Though short-tempered at times, Om’s love for his family is his greatest strength, and it’s this love that shapes his every decision. He dreams of securing a government job, not just for himself, but to make his parents proud. Om's contribution to the story is marked by his struggle for independence and personal growth adding layers of depth to the family drama, making him a character that viewers can’t help but root for.

3.What kind of prep did you do for your role?
For my role as Om, I read the script many times and focused on understanding his emotional depth. Om is driven by pride and can be short-tempered, but I also wanted to bring out his vulnerable side. I worked on giving Om a different walk, a swag and a style of speaking that characterises him. To make my portrayal more authentic, I learned the kind of Hindi spoken in Prayagraj, as it added a real touch to Om’s character and his connection to the place.

4.How was your experience collaborating with COLORS?
Working with COLORS has been an incredible privilege. The channel has a legacy of delivering exceptional content and I’m honoured to be joining it. I thank the channel for offering me this wonderful show and a role that I’ve not ventured into before.

5.What has your experience been like working with your co-actors?
Khushbu and Samiksha are incredible co-actors. Khushbu’s ability to bring subtle nuances to her character and Samiksha’s commanding presence make every scene light up with the core premise.  We share a wonderful offscreen dynamic, which translates into great work chemistry.

6.What’s the most exciting part of this journey for you as an actor?
Om is a character packed with layers, constantly evolving, and driven by the desire to prove himself. His mischievous and unpredictable nature required me to dial up those traits within myself, which was both a challenge and a wonderful opportunity for growth. Bringing Om to life has not only been rewarding but has also opened doors for me to explore more dynamic and challenging roles in the future.

7.What is the most challenging part of playing your character?
The challenge with the character of Om was finding the balance between his fiery temperament and his softer, more vulnerable side. It required me to dig deep and bring authenticity to every scene. I had to dial up a lot of his traits that I have in real life.

8.What sets this show apart from other family dramas?
Ram Bhavan truly stands apart with its powerful combination of family drama and intense power struggles. The heritage property of Ram Bhavan is not just a backdrop—it becomes a character, symbolizing the clash of egos, resilience, and familial ties. The drama revolves around this house, where the politics of both home and office collide, often coming head-to-head with a single authoritarian or tyrannical figure. This unique blend of personal and professional power plays makes Ram Bhavan a story like no other on television.

9.Any message for our fans?
We’re truly excited for you to meet our characters and experience the drama that unfolds within the walls of Ram Bhavan. We can’t wait to welcome you in and see for yourself the story we have worked very hard to enliven. Hope you shower love on the show!

Get ready to step into the drama and power play in 'Ram Bhavan'; premieres on 29th January and thereafter airs every night at 8.30 pm only on COLORS.
