In light of the recent buzz surrounding the divorce of cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal and Dhanashree Verma, social media has been abuzz with conversations around marital separations.

The tendency to place blame often disproportionately on women has reignited discussions on societal prejudices.

In an exclusive chat with TellyChakkar, Dalljiet Kaur shared her candid thoughts on the issue, highlighting the judgmental gaze of society, the scrutiny of the media, and the significance of standing up against abuse.

"Divorce is not a spectacle for society’s entertainment"

TellYChakkar: Dalljiet, divorces often become a topic of social gossip. What are your thoughts on the way society reacts to them?

Dalljiet Kaur: It is the easiest way for people to enjoy someone’s life falling apart. There is always more drama for society to feed on, without knowing a single fact about the people involved. No one enters a marriage lightly families are involved, emotions are involved. And yet, when things don’t work out, people are quick to form their own baseless opinions.

I was personally accused of marrying for money. People assumed that just because my husband worked in Africa and was born in the UK, he was wealthy. But the truth was far from their assumptions. He was just an employee in a company he didn’t even own a house. But for those who thrive on gossip, reality doesn’t matter.

"Women stepping out of abusive marriages are unfairly judged"

TellyChakkar: Do you think this kind of scrutiny is more severe for women?

Dalljiet Kaur: Absolutely. Society needs "flavourful" gossip for their evening chats, and unfortunately, women who leave toxic marriages are easy targets. But it’s not just the media ordinary women face the same kind of judgment when they decide to step away from abusive marriages. It’s deeply unfair.

"Speaking up about abuse unsettles those who stayed silent"

TellyChakkar: Many women hesitate to speak up about abuse. What do you think stops them?

Dalljiet Kaur: When women speak up, they unknowingly trigger those who have endured similar abuse but never found the courage to walk away. Some people feel uncomfortable watching others find the strength to leave perhaps because they never did. It’s an unsettling reality.

"Abuse knows no gender men suffer too"

TellyChakkar: There’s often a perception that only women face abuse. Do you think that’s a misconception?

Dalljiet Kaur: 100%. Abuse is not gender-specific. I am also speaking for men here there have been cases where women have abused men, and those men have spoken out. Narcissistic abuse, whether emotional or physical, is real, and every case is different. The scars left behind both physical and mental are life-altering, and no amount of money can heal them.

"Justice must be served both legally and morally"

Interviewer: What do you believe justice looks like for survivors of abuse?

Dalljiet Kaur: Survivors are not looking for revenge; they are seeking justice for everything they have endured. Those responsible should be punished—by the law and by a higher power. But most importantly, people need to stop turning real-life struggles into tea-time entertainment. Unless you know the truth, don’t add to the gossip mill. And to those who are suffering speak up. You are not alone, and you deserve to be heard.

Well said, Dalljiet! Her powerful words are sure to inspire and encourage anyone navigating the challenges of divorce, reminding them to stay strong and resilient through tough times.
