Urvashi Upadhyay’s Role in Mangal Lakshmi Breaks Stereotypes of Indian TV’s Typical Mother-in-Law

Urvashi Upadhyay

MUMBAI: Indian television has long been known for its saas-bahu dramas, often portraying mother-in-laws as controlling or manipulative figures. However, Urvashi Upadhyay’s portrayal of Kusum Saxena in Mangal Lakshmi is redefining this stereotype. Instead of being a strict or negative influence, Kusum is a kind, understanding, and progressive mother-in-law—something rarely seen in daily soaps.

Unlike traditional TV saas-bahu storylines filled with conflict, Mangal Lakshmi presents Kusum as a supportive figure. She guides her daughter-in-law, Mangal, through challenges, helps in making crucial life decisions, and ensures that women in her family stand strong. Several key moments in the show have proven her character’s depth, making her one of the most relatable and refreshing saas figures on TV today.

Urvashi’s versatility as an actress has been evident throughout her career. She has played strong and unique characters in various shows, including Dil Ki Nazar Se Khoobsurat, Ishq Subhan Allah, and Ek Ghar Banaunga. Whether it was her bold look in Dil Ki Nazar Se Khoobsurat or her powerful portrayal in Ishq Subhan Allah, she has always taken on diverse roles that break traditional molds.

Her latest character in Mangal Lakshmi continues this trend, proving that Indian television is slowly moving towards more realistic and empowering narratives. With Kusum, Urvashi is setting a new benchmark for how mother-in-law characters can be written—moving away from unnecessary drama and embracing more meaningful, positive relationships.
