Jhankaar Beats at 22: How PNC's Musical Gamble Became Bollywood's Cult Classic

Jhankaar

MUMBAI: Back in 2003, when Bollywood was still largely dominated by melodramas of a grand scale and star-studded ensemble casts were a common occurrence, Sujoy Ghosh made his directorial debut with Pritish Nandy Communications. Jhankaar Beats quietly redefined what Indian cinema could achieve with wit, music, and infinite charm. The film was in itself a huge tribute to music legend R.D. Burman, with the lead actors being shown as aspiring musicians who draw inspiration from his sonic scape. Starring Juhi Chawla, Sanjay Suri, Rahul Bose, Rinke Khanna, Riya Sen and debutant Shayan Munshi, Jhankaar Beats was a movie way ahead of its time, and 22 years later, this unassuming musical comedy is a testament to PNC's vision of creating and backing cinema that was both commercially viable and refreshingly different from the formulaic films at that time.

The film followed Deep, played by Sanjay Suri, and Rishi, played by Rahul Bose, who worked in an advertising agency by day and performed in clubs by night to fulfill their dream of winning Jhankar Beats, a music competition that they had been trying to win for the past two years. Aside from the movie actually showcasing romance and comedy in equal proportions, what made it stand out was the authentic portrayal of relationships, where the makers did not shy away from emphasizing the focus on 'real and relatable' problems. Another aspect that still makes Jhankaar Beats a memorable movie was its breakout original soundtrack by Vishal-Shekhar, with tracks like 'Tu Aashiqui Hai', ‘Suno Na’ and “Boss Kaun Hai’ featuring on people’s playlists till this day. The story explored three couples navigating different stages of relationships, thus creating a narrative that resonated with young, urban audiences who rarely saw their lives reflected on screen with such honesty and humor.

Under Pritish Nandy Communications’ banner, which had already made its mark with films like Kaante and would go on to produce cult classics like Chameli and Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi, Jhankaar Beats established a refreshing change in Indian mainstream cinema by combining a fine script with innovative casting and relatable performances with some spectacular music that didn't rely on the usual Bollywood formula of big stars and even bigger sets. Jhankaar Beats hit the right notes back then, which in turn led to the film going houseful for many weekends and running in theatres for over 100 days! In an era where content creators are constantly seeking the next breakthrough format, Jhankaar Beats remains one of the best examples of an effortless and seamless blend of music, comedy, and relatable storytelling into a film that was both timeless and ahead of its time.
