Maharashtra Govt. exempts The Light: Swami Vivekananda from entertainment tax

Biopics either glorify the lead character or underplay his or her brilliance. Either way, they often make for an interesting watch as it is intriguing to see iconic events unfold before one’s eyes as they may have happened years ago. But the same doesn’t imply to the biopics that have come our way this year. First it was Bhaag Milkha Bhaag that touched the chord of the audience in general. So much so, it has been granted tax relief exemption by many states. And now, it’s the turn of Tri Colour Productions Private Limited’s The Light: Swami Vivekananda to take the honours. The film inspired by the teachings of the Swami has been exempted from entertainment tax by the Maharashtra government, which happens to be the third state to do so after Gujarat and West Bengal. The tax exemption has been granted as the film's main objective is to promote the teachings of Swami Vivekananda. Producer J Misra, deeply influenced by Vivekananda’s ideologies, made this film to pay a tribute to Swami on his 150th birth anniversary. Talking about being granted tax-exemption in three major states, Misra said, “My sole motive behind making this film is to make it reach to people. And by being granted tax-exemption, I hope the film reaches to a larger audience.” The movie has been dubbed in 18 languages.
