It’s a warning to the single working-girl in Mumbai working away from home living in the metropolis on her own with only the security provided by the housing society standing between her and the next potential attacker.
On Tuesday morning actor Kamal Haasan and Sarika’s elder daughter Shruti Haasan was attacked by an intruder in her own home.
“Anything could have happened,” shudders a close family friend. “It’s only her presence of mind and her training in the martial arts that prevented a calamity. Shruti quickly slammed the door on the intruder’s face after he rang her bell on Tuesday morning and attacked her when she opened the door.”
Shruti, we are told, is shaken but calm. Her mother Sarika rushed to her side on hearing the news.
Says a friend of the actress, “She’s a fighter. And she will never allow anyone to take advantage of her. Her parents have brought up the two daughters to look after themselves. However this attack is beyond the realm of normal self-preservation. We still don’t know how the intruder managed to climb up to Shruti’s apartment, and what his intentions were.”
One thing is for sure. Mumbai is not safe for single women. Last year Pallavi Purkayastha, a legal advisor in Farhan Akhtar’s production house, was brutally murdered while she was alone in her apartment.
A top actress who wishes to be unnamed says, “We get nut cases like these knocking every day on our doors. What do I do? The apartment security is not able to stop them. Is Mumbai safe for single girls? Off the record...nope.”
