2013 - Pits of the Year

2013
While 2013 saw the advent of the new 100 crore club, there were quite a few big budget movies that turned out to be super duds and ended up burning a hole in the producer’s pocket. Tellychakkar.com takes a look at the high profile movies that flopped this year Once Upon a Time In Mumbai Dobaara One of the biggest colossal disappointments this year came from the stables of Balaji. Ekta Kapoor was quite gung ho about this one especially because the first installment starring Ajay Devgn and Emraan Hashmi was widely appreciated. She even went overboard with her promotional activities that saw the entire cast travelling to as far as Gulf to promote the movie. But little did Ekta realise that she would run into a road roller called Chennai Express driven by Shah Rukh Khan. The end result was disastrous. Ekta’s movie got a tepid opening partly because of the lesser number of screens it was released on and partly because of the lackluster script. Akshay’s Don act didn’t impress anyone and Imran Khan bored people to death with his mediocre acting. The flop show made Ekta hop mad and accuse SRK for the entire debacle. Finally dad Jeetendra had to use his good offices to mend fences. Bullett Raja Saif was looking to make it large with this one but the bullet fired missed its mark by a mile. Much was expected from Tigmanshu Dhulia’s first major commercial outing but it disappointed both critics and the audience alike. Saif’s rustic gangster act didn’t cut any ice and even Mahie Gill’s plunging neckline couldn’t save the day. Meanwhile, Sonakshi add yet another flop to her filmography with this flick. Himmatwala Great expectations are not always fulfilled. Much was expected from Sajid Khan’s remake of the 1983 film Himmatwala starring Jeetendra and Sridevi. Sajid chose Ajay Devgn and Southern beauty Tamannaah Bhatia to fill in the shoes of Jeetendra and Sridevi. Unfortunately they tripped and fell flat on their face. The movie made people seethe with anger. The jokes cracked in it never got any laughter and everyone started gunning for Sajid’s head for having ruined a classic by making the worst possible remake. The after effects of the movie were there for all to see. While Ajay laid low, Tamannaah went back to the southern film industry. The worst hit was Sajid. Not only did he lose money after this movie but his rumoured girlfriend Jacqueline Fernandez also said bye bye to him. Ishkq in Paris We wonder how many of you saw this movie. Those who did, we pity them. Those who didn’t, well consider yourself lucky. This comeback vehicle of Preity Zinta was marred with a lot of problems and issues right from day one. The never ending shooting delays and distribution problems made life difficult for the already out-of-limelight Preity. The beleaguered actress did finally manage to release the movie which saw her romancing a not at all famous actor. The movie just churned out 2 crore and poor Preity vanished into oblivion again. Zanjeer Classics can never be remade. But who will make our Bollywood denizens understand that. Amitabh’s Zanjeer was remade to launch Chiranjeevi’s son Ram Charan’s Bollywood career. And much like Himmatwala, this one too gave people another chance to boo. Nothing impressed anyone about the remake and Ram Charan beat a hasty retreat to his home ground soon after the box-office disaster while his co-star from the movie, Priyanka Chopra went back to her crooning ways. Gori Tere Pyar Mein Imran was under tremendous pressure to deliver in this movie especially after producing two super duds in the form of Matru ki Bijlee…and Once Upon A Time…He had the right partner in the form of Kareena Kapoor. But poor Imran’s bad luck continued. The movie refused to charm the audience despite Imran putting in an honest performance. In spite of Karan Johar backing this movie, nothing could prevent it from becoming a flop. Boss Boss was not exactly a big disaster considering that it collected almost 50 crore at the box-office. But if you have a superstar like Akshay Kumar that is not what you expect, right? The father-son drama in Boss didn’t really bring tears in the eyes of the audience. Even a party number from Honey Singh couldn’t help the cause as this yet another South Indian remake met its predictably doom soon at the box-office. Besharam Ranbir was driving a dream wave of popularity after wowing masses with his pelvic thrusts and effortless acting in Yeh Jawaani Hain Deewani. But all the good work came undone when his next offering Besharam crashed and how. The movie was unequivocally panned by critics and masses. Even the presence of Rishi and Neetu Singh did little to lift the movie. Thankfully, Ranbir's star value remained unaffected despite the movie sinking at the box-office.
