61st National Awards: Full List of Winners

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and Rajkummar Rao
61st National Film Awards were announced at a Press Conference held at the National Media Centre in New Delhi today. In a few major surprises, Anand Gandhi directed Ship of Theseus was named Best Feature Film while Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's film Bhaag Milkha Bhaag won the award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. Jolly LLB was adjudged the Best Hindi Film. Meanwhile, for team Shahid, a film that was overshadowed at all popular film awards, the 61st National awards brought in double delight as both Rajkummar Rao and Hansal Mehta ended up winning the Best Actor and Best Director awards respectively. Rajkummar though will be sharing this award with Malayalam actor Suraj Venjaramoodu who too has been adjudged as the Best Actor for his role in Malayalam film Perariyathavar. The winners were chosen by an 11-member jury headed by director Saeed Akhtar Mirza. It is reported that Rajkummar's intense portrayal of a young Muslim man who is persecuted, and who rebels and ultimately comes back to fight the injustice as a committed law abiding lawyer, is what impressed the jury. While it’s a rare occurrence when two actors are adjudged winners in the same category, the jury couldn’t ignore Suraj’s dignified and quiet portrayal of a man on the lower margins of the society in Perariyathavar. Meanwhile, Geetanjali Thapa won the Best Actress Award for Liar's Dice while veteran actor Saurabh Shukla bagged the Best Supporting Actor award for Jolly LLB. The Best Supporting Actress category saw two winners namely Amruta Subhash for Marathi film Astu and Egyptian actress Aida El-Kashef for Ship Of Theseus. Other notable winners included Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawala starrer Gulabi Gang which won the award for Best Film in social welfare, Kiran Rao’s Ship of Theseus - the Best Feature Film and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag which was named Best Popular Film providing wholesome entertainment. The 61st National Film Awards along with Dada Saheb Phalke award will be given by President Pranab Mukherjee on 3 May (2014). We tried reaching Rajkummar Rao and Saurabh Shukla for a reaction but understandably their phones were busy presumably with congratulatory calls. Tellychakkar congratulates all the winners.
