Saif Ali Khan

MUMBAI :They say an apple doesn't fall very far from the tree and this is very much applicable to the Hindi Film Industry, where a son follows in the footsteps of his mother/father and chooses to become an actor/filmmaker too. The glitz and glamor world attracts many but who can sustain it depends on the talent you have and the connection you make with the audience.

Today we will talk about one such star kid who made his way into acting but did not have even a single solo hit in 11 years. He however managed to get a Nation Award, which fuelled a lot of controversy around it.

We are talking about the Nawab of Pataudi who was also a former Indian cricket captain Mansoor Ali Khan and Sharmila Tagore’s son Saif Ali Khan. Saif had a strong lineage and got instant popularity for his name. While he made his debut in 1993, most of his films were either multi starrers or had at least 2 leads. These included; Main Khiladi Tu Anari, Yeh Dillagi, Kachcha Dhaage, and Kya Kehna. Till 2004, Saif starred in 29 films out of which only 6 were a hit, however none of these saw him as a solo hero.

Saif, interestingly, still was called a ‘star’ and continued to get big budget films.

The 2004 hit Hum Tum was Saif’s only solo hit, which established his name as a force to reckon with and over the years he went on to give hits like Salaam Namaste, Race, Love Aaj Kal, and Cocktail.

Surprisingly enough, Saif won a National Award for his role in Hum Tum, beating audiences favorites Shah Rukh Khan in Swades and Kamal Haasan in Virumaandi. Many speculated that he managed to win the award since his mother Sharmila Tagore was the then chairperson of the CBFC. Many others however argued that CBFC had no say in choosing National Award winners as there was a separate jury for that.

Saif had a string of flops like Humshakals, Phantom, Rangoon, and Bazaar, in mid 2010’s, and finally got a hit with the Ajay Devgn starrer Tanhaji.

He was recently seen in Om Raut’s Adipurush which received a lot of backlash for its dialogues and portrayals of iconic characters.
