Rajshri Rani Pandey had come down to Mumbai with her dreams just like millions of others, but in spite of that today she stands out in this crowd, for she has achieved her dream and is living it with pride.
She is currently the lead face of Star Plus’ Suhani Si Ek Ladki, a role that hundreds of girls would kill to get, but she is pretty much grounded even today.
In a freewheeling chat with Tellychakkar.com she talks about being a small town girl and about her family values.
How many auditions did you give before bagging this role?
I did not audition much for I had a clear picture of the kind of roles that I’d fit in. That is why I used to go for the auditions that actually suited me. I received a call for Suhani after a month of me having auditioned for it. But then I re-auditioned for it three to four times till they actually got me on board.
Did you always dream of being an actress or were there other aspirations too?
I always wanted to be an actress. In fact, I used to share it with my friends and relatives; but in the family I come from, acting is not looked at as a professional choice. So, one fine day after gathering some courage I expressed my desire to be an actress in front of my elder brother and he declined it at once. But after some persuasion he agreed on letting me audition for few shows.
Are they still unhappy with your decision?
The scenario has changed completely. They are extremely proud of me and they never miss my show. In fact, they make it a point to watch the repeat telecast if they missed the episode.
Have you set any goals for yourself?
I don’t plan life much. For now I just want this show to be liked by all.
You’re not a conventionally good looking actor. Does this fact ever bother you?
I was never bothered about it. I have seen actresses with dark complexion making it big on the small screen. Look at Parul Chauhan of Bidaai fame or Rajshree Thakur of Saat Phere. Maybe I am the only one who is fat and dark but then simple people connect with us. I connected with Parul and Rajshree.
Looks like you’ve watched a lot of TV in your growing up days.
I still watch a lot of TV. My favourite couple on TV was Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon and I loved Sanaya Irani in it. She is an extremely talented person and I liked the chirpiness that her character brought on-screen.
Are you dating anyone?
I have never dated anyone. In my family being around a guy is a big thing and the thought of me having chosen this career path usually surprises me. Even today after I pack-up I go straight to my home. There are times when our cast decides on catching up for a movie and I have to inform my brother before going for it.
Don’t you miss freedom?
Not at all. In fact, I like the fact that they care about me so much. As far as dating someone is concerned I think I am happier single, for I’ve seen too many of my friends cry to me about their boyfriends (smiles).
