What's really happening with Comedy Nights with Kapil? Let's find out...

Comedy Nights with Kapil

The BUZZ, like always, is around Kapil Sharma’s cult show, Comedy Nights with Kapil (K9 and SOL). The most popular comedy chat show on Indian television, it has been entertaining one and all for the last three years.

But the BUZZ is not about its apparent popularity, it’s about Kapil’s decision to end the show.

A leading daily reported about the difference of opinion between Kapil and the heads at the channel where the show airs, namely Colors.

And since the report, we tried to hunt for some more details about the show’s future. But before getting into further info, let us walk down memory lane and remind our readers how it all started.

Kapil Sharma, who was a regular face in Comedy Circus on Sony TV moved to Colors on 2013 June. And since then there was no turning back for the young man as the series went on to become a super successful one. However, Kapil’s brainchild has always been in news for some reason or the other. Be it Bollywood superstar SRK terming it to be his favourite show or Kapil’s alleged affair story with the creative head of the show, Preeti Simoes or fire on the sets, the series has always been a headline churner.

Previously too, talks floated in the air on Comedy Nights ending. Noises from the rift hit media, in the past, with the show going weekly from bi-weekly. Kapil’s monopoly in the comedy space in Colors ended with the launch of Comedy Nights Bachao, which also meant a deeper wedge in the relationship between the king of comedy and the broadcaster, as per industry sources.

Now emerges reports of Comedy Nights coming to an end on 17 January (2016). There is also a buzz about Kapil taking his brainchild to another broadcaster. Reports claim that Kapil was not happy with the way the show was being promoted and felt that channel is giving more importance to the other comedy venture of the channel, Comedy Nights-Bachao (Optimystix).

To know more about the development when we contacted Kiku Sharda aka Palak, who is an integral part of the show, stated, “Being a part of the team CNWK, I agree with Kapil and will be with my team in future.”

While Sunil Grover (Gutthi), Ali Asgar (Dadi) and Upasana Singh (Bua) refrained from commenting anything, a source from the industry shared, “Kapil and Krushna are at loggerheads from quite some time now. And now, with the Comedy Nights Bachao following similar format and ideas, (the trigger being the recently aired similar suhag raat sequence in both the shows) things went out of hand. Kapil wanted some demarcation between these two series and wanted the channel to take a call. Kapil is hurt but he may also be making such statements to strike a better deal with the channel.”

Armed with info, when we buzzed Krushna, he did not answer our call. But what grabbed our eyeballs was Krushna’s WhatsApp status- ‘Promotion I hv my comedy nights (tongue out smiley) (sic)’. Hmm, isn’t that saying a lot, dear readers?

Bharti Singh, on the other hand, shared, “Honestly saying, we are like a family. I am sure that Kapil does not hold anything against us, I assume the entire thing must have been blown out of proportion.”

As we tried to reach out to many others for some more info, a credible source from the production house shared, “For past few months there have been discussions about revamping the format of the show. And before doing that we were planning to go on a season break for a short span of time. With Kapil announcing to end the series, we might go on a break and come back with a second season.”

“Only if the viewers would remember even before, he posted on social media accounts about waving a goodbye to the show. But, with the channel intervening, things sorted out between K9 Productions and the channel. Now, we hear that the channel will soon have a meeting with Kapil and who knows that history might just repeat itself,” added our source.

While some media reports that Kapil plans to move his show to Star Plus, a source informs that he is keeping an eye on Sony TV as well. But, none of the developments can be confirmed at the moment, as all are at an initial stage.

An industry expert on ground of anonymity opined, “If the show remains on Colors, we are pretty sure that this controversy will give a boost to CNWK and it will surely reach a new height.  But if things develop otherwise and the show is moved to Star Plus or Sony TV then it might need some time to pull in the audience. Nevertheless, considering the popularity of the show, I don’t feel that will be an issue.”

We have information coming in that both Kapil and channel are yet to make any official announcement on the closure to the cast and crew.

“But things do look a bit grim this time,” ended the industry expert.

A channel spokesperson chose not to comment on the issue.

Before concluding all we can say is that we hope that the bitter sweet relation between the channel and K9 Productions sorts out soon and we continue to enjoy some more entertaining episodes of CNWK.
