Was it a deliberate choice to do a movie like Gaslight, so that the audience can get to see you in a different light?

I honestly feel that it’s an actor’s work to do different kinds of films rather than being typecast. So, I am very lucky that Pavan (Kirpalani) sir thought that I would be able to play a role like this, and Akshai (Puri) sir and Ramesh (Taurani) sir reached out to me for a film like this. I was just very excited and happy to be able to do something new and different.

Have you ever faced gaslighting in real life?

I think it’s very important to understand that the thing with gaslighting is that it’s not a very obvious thing, it’s a subliminal psychological thing which a lot of times is understood in retrospect as ‘oh maybe I was gaslighted’. I don’t even really know if it has happened or it hasn’t happened to me. All I know is that as a person I am very self-critical, I am quite harsh on myself. So, for me it is better that I don’t come to know because I am also a strong girl. But, Meesha’s character, she is very fragile and vulnerable, she has trust issues, and she doesn’t come from a loved family. So, she comes from a place where any kind of gaslighting is very harmful and despite that she is just exuding constant strength and determination.

In Gaslight, you play a role where you are searching for your father, and later trying to solve the mystery of his murder. So, was it emotionally difficult to portray the role as you have a parent at home but here there’s something else?

I think as an actor I am also figuring myself out. It’s been a couple of films now, and I thought I would rely on the method more than I do. I just try to fully believe and portray what my character would be feeling. Till my first four films, it was okay, but when I started shooting Atrangi Re, I realized that I don’t have the life to be able to substitute here. I don’t know what it’s like to have an imaginary boyfriend, I don’t know what it’s like to have a dead parent; I don’t know these things. So, in the future, if I have to play a killer, if I have to play a disabled person, then how will I do it? So, I think the power of imagination has become hopefully stronger; imagination is important, but disturbing yourself by pretending that your real father is dead, I am not like that.
